Tech Tip: Google+
Emilia Azar ENG-PWR ‘15 We’ve all heard of Google+ by now… but until about a week ago, I was unfamiliar with how the application could help me both in my personal and professional life. Now I recognize Google Plus as a useful tool that every college student should learn how to utilize. In essence, Google+ (or Google Plus) is “a … Continue Reading

Tips for Applying for an Internship
Bridget Hurley ’15 This summer I interned full-time at a public relations firm in Los Angeles, California. I spent my time speaking with PR professionals and clients, writing press releases and pitches, and communicating with journalists about our clients. In short, I was doing the work I hope to do professionally post-graduation. I got lucky with my internship and loved … Continue Reading

Public Speaking Through Writing
Guest Blogger Miranda Romano ’16 Without an audience, writing becomes a frivolous task. This is true for every work; even personal writing has a specific audience. To be successful in any type of writing, identifying the proper audience can make or break a piece of writing. According to Ede and Lunsford In their article “Audience Addressed/Audience Invoked: The Role of … Continue Reading

Tech Tip: Facebook Privacy Settings
Katie Makepeace: Lit & PWR ‘15 For growing professionals, Facebook can present a lot of questions in terms of how to manage your online presence and identity. Although the primary audience of your Facebook profile may be family and friends, you can count on potential employers to research how you choose to present yourself through social media. Because of this … Continue Reading

Writing in the Real World
Guest Blogger Miranda Romano ’16 I expected a long, hallway entrance lined with American flags; crests and red velvet curtains. At least high speed internet. But these were not the things that greeted me on my first day of work in the Congressman’s office. Instead, I stepped into a four room office nestled up in the annex of the local … Continue Reading

LinkedIn Profile Tips
Carolyn Braganca, English ’15 LinkedIn is a professional networking website—similar to Facebook but more career-focused. This is not the best place to share what parties you went to over the weekend, to post pictures of your food, or to tell a funny story about your cat. This is the kind of website on which you share your career aspirations, your … Continue Reading

Tech Tip: Setting Up a Digication Portfolio
One of the challenges professional writers face is conveying their expertise to potential employers. Final products showcase some of professional writers’ capabilities, but they typically do not capture the process strategies writers/rhetors used to create the final products. Just as artists often develop portfolios to demonstrate the range of their work, professional writers use portfolios to provide evidence of both 1) the range of products they can create and 2) the process strategies they have in their “rhetorical toolkits” to analyze complex rhetorical situations, develop appropriate content, conduct research, user-test drafts, deliver polished documents, and explain their rhetorical choices to clients and supervisors. There’s no such thing as “too many hats”
Guest Blogger Chris Price Which way of thinking? If it were possible for me to summarize what I’ve learned from my internship in one phrase, it would be this: There is no such thing as “too many hats.” I believe anyone interning at a publishing company would agree. When I say “hats,” I’m not referring to the literal headgear used … Continue Reading

Communicating Through Social Media
Guest Blogger Beckah Porter ’16 There is no surprise that technology is advancing and playing huge roles in our daily lives, but when I was asked to talk to a fashion designer, Whitney Port, over Twitter, I could not help but be skeptical. I thought to myself, “How could this work?” This summer I am interning for a website called … Continue Reading
