On a rolllllllll 11.10.15

We are so happy to report that everything is beginning to happen all at once! After submitting the Acorn Proposal (gloriously written by our own Kelsey Lane and Annie Phelan) a discussion of local partners ensued and our class is excited for the prospect of a community garden project in Williams High School. The local partners committee will begin reaching out and communicating with Peacehaven in order to make this abstraction a reality. (Click here for more information!)

As the end of our first semester as juniors is approaching, we are beginning to think about Stoles and the impact we want to make in our last year and a half. To better achieve our goals, we compiled a class list of expectations that we have for one another in order to hold ourselves to a higher standard. On that token, the social committee held a Pan-Periclean bonding event in the Oaks. With the best turnout from the 2017s, apple cider courtesy of Christian and pumpkin pie courtesy of Kelsey was merrily enjoyed. Additionally, a member of the Class of 2018 has a rice cooker and graced us with its bountiful rice.

Our class sent in a concept paper (crafted mainly by the fabulous Christian Kowalski and Oly Zayac) to the embassy in Namibia with a detailed description of what we hope our Winter Term for 2017 could look like abroad. This called for many hours of writing and brainstorming by the whole class. We are waiting to hear back and sincerely hoping for the best12238487_10206387397978658_4112051516582983392_o! The Grants Committee is in motion and has its writers ready to work! Professor Moore has been extremely helpful and a great guide in understanding logistics and concepts.

Pura Vida bracelets have been purchased by the Fundraising Committee and will be sold for $5 at Elon in addition to surrounding stores (hopefully!). We also are looking into the prospect of a yard sale in order to fundraise from furniture being sold at the end of the year.

We will begin to start making goals and ways to communicate as the group switches for winter term and we no longer have regular class meeting times. As someone going abroad next semester I cannot wait to watch this play out and to be apart of this great project we’re building.

Sam 🙂

P.S. LOOK WHAT KELSEY MADE!!!!!

Insights on the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone from a long time Periclean Scholars partner

Insights on the Ebola crisis in Sierra Leone from a long time Periclean Scholars partner Dr. Lucy Steinitz

Sierra Leone Up Close and Personal. December12, 2014

Dr. Lucy Steinitz in 2003.

Dr. Lucy Steinitz in 2003.

Dr. Lucy Steinitz, co-founder of Catholic AIDS Action in Namibia in 1998, was the first partner with which the Class of 2006 connected back in  2003.  She was a the main point of contact between our Pericleans, students, faculty and administration at the University and Namibia and the Polytechnic of Namibia, the US Embassy in Windhoek, and many HIV/AIDS activists and experts that made the Future Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS in January 2006 such a success (including coverage by CNN-International).

For five years she and I co-taught a summer session online course “The Global Impact of HIV/AIDS” and she remains a wonderful asset to and friend of the program.  I am honored to call her a friend and colleague.
The linked diary are Lucy’s reflections from her recent visit to Sierra Leone on a fact-finding mission with Catholic Relief Services.
Her pictures and word shed critical light on many of the questions around the Ebola crisis.

A note from our long-time partner Anita Isaacs in Namibia

Greetings and update from our long-time partner Anita Isaacs in Namibia

Greetings to my big family; Periclean Scholars, friends of the Periclean Scholars, Mentors and all supporters of the Periclean.

I hope you are doing great in the new year 2014. I always feel proud of being a part of you guys. It has been a wonderful 11years together. Every second I think of you I remember on how I met the Class of 2006. By then I was just another AIDS patient waiting to be added to the Namibian AIDS death statistics. Today I am still living to the fullest. My dream of becoming a grandmother became true, today I am a grandmother of three wonderful grandchildren. To be honest the Class of 2006 saved my life, they put life into my days, not only days into my life. They taught me how to plan for my future. Back in 2003 if you are HIV positive you were regarded as a living dead, living amongst the living. But after my initial meeting with the group led by Dr. Tom Arcaro, it was a blessing for our support group. Today the group have change from being the people with AIDS to healthy people, back to work. We are proud parents, who have grown up children.

I never dreamt of going to University, but today I am in my third year at the University of Namibia. Thanks to your on-going moral, physical, and financial support. I am looking forward on meeting with Class of 2017. Continue doing the good and wonderful work you are showing to throughout the World. You need to know that what you are doing have a positive impact on the lives of millions of people Globally.

May the almighty give you strength in the work you are doing!!!!

Notice of an opportunity from Sam White, Class of 2006

Notice of an opportunity from Sam White, Class of 2006:

Roll 51 - 3065I hope you are well! I wanted to let you know that Global Health Corps applications for the 2014-15 fellowship are NOW OPEN! I think that this fellowship would be an awesome fit for Periclean Scholars – both previous and graduating – given the cross-cutting themes in the missions of GHC and PS! Plus, I’d love to have another Elon alum in the program! 🙂

GHC is looking for driven, passionate, young leaders with diverse skill sets and experiences to join the movement for health equity. One-year paid fellowship positions are available with high impact NGOs and government organizations in East Africa, Southern Africa and the US.Screen Shot 2013-11-07 at 9.09.27 AM

As a current Global Health Corps fellow in Malawi with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, I can say that the fellowship has been an incredible opportunity. I am gaining valuable professional experience, and engaging in leadership training and mentorship. Most importantly, I have become part of a vibrant and supportive global network of like-minded peers who I can call upon for advice and support throughout my career.

A key part of the GHC fellowship is support – fellows are provided housing, a living stipend, medical insurance, transportation, a dedicated in-country program manager, mentorship and professional development opportunities. During the fellowship year, fellows collaborate, innovate, and create sustainable change.

Applications close January 26, 2014.

I am happy to answer any questions people might have about the application process or about the fellowship.

Cheers,

Sam [click on name for email hyperlink to contact Sam directly]

Life Update from two-time Periclean-in-Residence Anita Ndalulilua Iyambo Isaacs

Life Update from two-time Periclean-in-Residence Anita Ndalulilua Iyambo Isaacs

It is my second year at UNAM and it seems I am already in my third, how time can fly!! We have only two months to go and it will be final exams for the second year. Looking forward to my third year.

This year is a difficult year for Namibia because we are facing the worst drought in twenty years. We have received tremendous support from other countries and friends all over the world.

We had our oath taking ceremony on the 24th April, this gives us opportunity to practice our theory in the communities. We have been doing practice with individual clients during the first semester and now we have started with groups. Next year we will be doing communities. I am so excited to put in practice what I have learned, although I have been doing it for the past twenty years, I will be doing it professional.

DSCN2723I am still working with the YWCA of Namibia, NENAWOLA and Tonata, although not on a fulltime basis. I have so many assignment especially this semester and time is limited.

When I speak to others I always mention that I have a big family across the Ocean who keeps me alive eleven years ago, and you are still keeping me and my family going. I am very grate full to all your support.

I am looking forward to come and work with Class of  2017, and I hope you will be helping me in my work. My family is doing well and my grandchildren are also well. Thank you for continuing supporting me and fighting with us HIV. To us it is no more a death sentence but a disease, we can control and continue living like any other human being.

Thoughts -and actions!- from a long-time Periclean partner

266Long-time Periclean partner Dr. Lucy Steinitz

Dr. Lucy Steinitz was one of the very first partners of the Class of 2006 as we made our outreach to Namibia.  She “starred” in our documentary series, helped host two of our Pericleans our very first summer together, was a Periclean-in-Residence, and perhaps most importantly help us to organize our “Future Leaders Summit on HIV/AIDS“.

We have remained in close contact over the years and even co-taught an online course entitled “THe Global Impact of HIV/AIDS” from 2006-2010.  Lucy and Bernd are now living and working in Ethiopia and continue in their journey toward a better world for all.

Lucy sent this information about how they are partnering with local Ethiopian students.  This is a great model from which we can all learn a great deal.  Click here:  Assefa student program PP January 2013

On a side note, I recommended to her the MSF book In The Eyes of Others and here was her response (in part):

I will download your suggested book of essays.  But what gets my goat is the notion that there is a one-size/ one-style that fits all approach.  For the destitute, we need to promote (and support) income transfers to create a safety net of support.  Households that are destitute and labor constrained cannot make it on their own, and their kids deserve the same basic opportunities as others.  Households that are slightly better off can benefit from economic strengthening and, to some degree, from economic development (trade, industry, etc) in their country as a whole.  There are other subdivisions that can also be made, as well.  At the same time, however, when governments are dysfunctional, outsiders may have to be more directive than is ideal, because otherwise nothing will get done.

Wise words, those.

Meeting again in Namibia: Jenn Pierson and Anita

Meeting again in Namibia:  Jenn Pierson and Anita

Jenn Pierson, a member of the inaugural Class of Periclean Scholars, the Class of 2006, is now teaching in Namibia at Omatjete Primary School through the World Teach program. Omatjete is a large rural village located one hour north of the large town of Omaruru in the Erongo Region.  Most rural residents are subsistence farmers from the Herero tribe and speak Otjiherero.

JennAnitaNamibiaAt Omatjete she is teaching grades 5 and 7 primarily English but is also teaching some non-promotional subjects like Art and Basic Information Science (BIS, basically library/basic computing).
You can follow Jenn’s experience in Namibia on her blog “The Wide World Comforts Her.”
You can find Omatjete  here.
On a recent trip to the capital city of Windhoek Jenn was able to meet up with Anita Isaacs, a two-time Periclean-in-Residence who remains a
strong partner with the Class of ’06.  She is being supported by the Periclean Scholars Alumni Association as she does course work at the University of Namibia toward a degree in social work.
Anita was a key figure in the documentary series on HIV/AIDS that was produced by the ’06’s nd “starred in a documentary about her life directed by Erin Barnett.

Alumni NEWS!!! Please read all the way down….

Several exciting news updates:

First, this from Sam White, Class of ’06 [focus on HIV/AIDS in Namibia:

Greetings friends,

I hope this message finds you well! I have some fun news to share on the job front…IMG_1164

I was selected as a 2013-2014 Global Health Corps Fellow and I will be moving to Malawi in July! I’ll be working as monitoring and evaluation fellow with the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation. The fellowship is one year and I think it will be an awesome
opportunity for me to get some hands-on experience in the field.

I will likely start up a blog for those interested in following along with me on this journey – more info on that in the coming months. In the meantime, I wanted to let you know of my upcoming move. Yay!

 Cheers,

Sam

Next, an update from Jenn Pierson, also Class of ’06:

Here are the major details of my placement in Namibia:

“Greetings from Windhoek! I hope your preparations for your time in Namibia are coming together well.
After much consideration, I have decided to place you at Omatjete Primary School. Omatjete is a large

DSCF0094
rural village located one hour north of the large town of Omaruru in the Erongo Region. Transportation
can be irregular, but it is generally not too difficult to get to Omaruru. Omaruru is a nice town, a bit
smaller than the other major towns throughout Namibia, but with a very nice grocery store and most
anything you would need and can’t find in the small shops of Omatjete. I am not as familiar with Erongo
as I am with the Ohangwena Region in the north, but believe Omaruru to be a more diverse town,
surrounded by very similar villages compared to the north. Most rural residents are subsistence farmers
from the Herero tribe and speak Otjiherero.

At Omatjete you will be teaching primarily English but may also teach some non-promotional subjects like
Art and Basic Information Science (BIS, basically library/basic computing). The grades of your classes will
vary between grades 5 and 7.

Finally, and in some ways the most exciting, Annie Huth, ’12, passed on the news that this morning that USD $60,000 has arrived in the CRHP for use in building a new health training facility on the CRHP campus.  Annie is the inaugural Elon Fellow for CRHP, an initiative of the Class of 2012.  Annie will be updating us with reports and photos of the build in process.  These funds are from the World Expo2020 IzmirCommittee in Izmir, Turkey and is one part of their commitment to “Health for All.”  Here is the video that was screened as part of their presentation to the BIE in Paris last November.
