Hello all! My name is Kendra Sterneck. I am from Leawood, Kansas (believe it or not, I do not live on a farm or know Dorothy). After changing my mind about a hundered times last year, I am now a double major in Public Health and Human Services. On campus, I  am involved with Hillel, Elon Volunteers’ Alternative Breaks, am a tour guide, and was recently an Orientation Leader.

I went to a Periclean Scholars event last fall, and after speaking with multiple participants, I was hooked. I had the opportunity to volunteer in Cambodia the summer before my first year at Elon. I was shocked by what I saw and experienced both externally and internally. This program completely altered my outlook on life, my goals for the future and my character. This was a short three week experience that sparked my interest in service and educated me on different issues around the world, and I cannot wait to have an even more extensive experience with the multi-faceted journey of Periclean Scholars.

Each of us have unique qualities to bring to the table throughout the next three years. Personally, I believe that my passion for international service learning that will drive me to be an effective member of this diverse Periclean class of 2017. This semester will be very exciting, because not only will we learn more and more about Namibia (a country that I heard of for the first time last year) but also about each other’s strengths, interests and experiences. All though I expect working with a community so far away will be hard, I look forward to our cohort supporting one another  through tough times to work towards a successful end goal. The highlight of my first week at Elon this year was seeing the pure enthusiasm for this new endeavor in our first class period together. I cannot wait to see where this endeavor takes us over the next three years, and here’s to a life-changing experience together!
