Title Sequences

In order to write this blog post I went through the title sequences and watched some of the intros to movies I had actually seen.

I watched Se7en, which happens to be one of the best movies and everyone should watch it. The title sequence is super creepy and eerie and plays very well off the overall movie. The typography of it is great. I really love the effects they put on the fonts and the animations they did to make it look very jolting.

I then watched Thank You For Smoking. I really liked the title sequence for it because it definitely played to the theme of the film, both in design and audio. I also particularly liked it because I felt like it was “perfectly imperfect.” The makers of this sequence definitely had a distinct look and feel that they were going for, which included multiple perspectives/angles, a lot of variation in colors, textures, patterns and movements, and multiple fonts. I like that even though it had so much variation in it, it all combined into something very visually stimulating.

I watched the sequence for Juno, which was created by the same designers to made Thank You For Smoking. I love this one so much. First of all, I love the song. But design wise, it is so incredibly detailed in the way that it is hand drawn and animated. At points it really looks as thought it the drawing is actually occurring right then and there – rather than it just looking hand drawn, the motion of drawing the scene happens in front of your eyes.

Lastly, I watched the title sequence for Mad MMX. I have no idea what Mad MMX is besides an event that happens. The title sequence was so incredible. It wasn’t particularly typographic however, the bit of type they included were people’s names and I would have absolutely no idea how to even try to do anything like what they did with the type. Not a clue. It appeared to just pop out of fabric. The insane part about this title sequence though is the building and disintegrating of a human body, which appeared to include about a thousand layers of tissue paper.

So now basically I wish I was a title sequence designer because that would be super cool.
