Fonts are important. Very important. Font matters almost just as much as the message. Until watching the Helvetica documentary I never realized this font was literally everywhere.
I think helvetica may be a little overused but with good reason. The font can transcend and convey any type of message. Helvetica is generic but makes a bold statement at the same time. By simply changing the font weight, spacing, and other characteristics, the font can be personalized to your liking. The versatility of it makes it so powerful.
I think now is a very exciting time in the visual communications field. So many people have the power to create and share. The next wave of typography will no doubt be innovative given the strong following of helvetica and the “grunge” period.
