Helvetica

“Typography is really white it’s not even black. It’s the space between the blacks that really makes it.” This was by far my favorite quote from this film. The zen like approach to designing and understanding typeface.

This documentary made it painfully clear the level of my ignorance into the world of typography. It is very interesting to see the opposing views of the old school designers and that “we only need a maybe a dozen types” versus the new designers that feel that fonts can be designed entirely new with the purpose of expressing emotion or feeling.

I will most certainly have a whole new set of eyes when looking at what were once everyday signs and displays and giving consideration to the type used within and certainly the prevalence of helvetica will be easier to recognize.

It was very interesting to gain an insight into the evolution of typography as it relates to society and the different movements within art. I have used helvetica, verdana, and palatino a ton just to be different from the typical times fonts. Now I will use them with a small glimpse into how they had an impact in changing the overall view of typography.
