What the Helvetica?

Helvetica, a documentary by Gary Hustwit, is very interesting. For the first time in my life I was forced to recognize the world of typography. After watching the film I found myself wondering, what the hell have I been looking at? You may be wondering what I mean by that question. Well, I spend my days looking at signs consciously and unconsciously everyday but I can’t recall one time when I really noticed the type face. Unaware of what effects the text I’m looking at has on my emotions and judgement. However, it’s evident to me that typography is as important as decorating your own home.

Helvetica type face in particular, is obviously the “Apple” of its time. Standing alone as the example for the rest of the industry. Now, is that a good thing? Is it possible that Helvetica has just become over used and is limiting the artistic possibilities for future type designs and there use? Me not being and expert on typography can’t answer that question. I personally like Helvetica after realizing what it is. Its obvious to me why it is used so much. The text is clear and straight to the point no matter what setting it is placed in. However, now that I have an eye for type, I will be looking for a new and improved text that will knock me off my feet.
