What is art? Does it matter?

I believe it is very important to be aware of different artist and artistic movements because that is the history of art and we are just branching from these forms. When one knows as much as they can about art then they will become a better artist. Even though we are “media” students, we are still artists. We can learn and take a lot from the many different artists that are out there and the movements that they are related too. It is very important to know where things have come from in order to make them better for the future.

When someone wants to be good at sports, they don’t just pick up a soccer ball and try to learn the sport by themselves. They seek the help of professionals to help better their skills and to become better at the sport. This is the same with art. If we didn’t look up to professionals in the field and learn from them then we will not get as far as we could. It is important to research different artists and discover what things worked from them, but also what things didn’t work for them. We have the ability to learn from them using the web so why not take that opportunity. It is so easy now to look up different artists and movements that newer artists owe it to themselves to do this.

As design students we are artists and it can really help us to look at the different art forms and incorporate them into our own work. The only way to get better is to learn from people who have had success in the business. People who are too stubborn to learn and listen to others will not get as far.
