I don’t know how someone would not think it’s important to be aware of these artists and artistic movements. As visual media students, it is going to be our job to bring an ad, campaign, story or game to life through what it looks like. Therefore, it’s our responsibility to learn what others have done before us so we can emulate it and be inspired by it. It goes with that classic saying that we can’t know where we’re going if we don’t know where we’ve been.
While I do think it’s important for us to know about the professionals, I think it’s more important for us to learn about their form, style and the artistic movements that inspired them. Not only can we gather inspiration, but we can take what we see in those works and transfer those concepts to ours. I think as visual media students we need to be as informed as we can be about art, artistic movements and the strategies in making something look aesthetically pleasing.
If we want to learn more about professionals in this area, I think we need to immerse ourselves as much as we can – read about these artists, visit art museums and understand how important it is to utilize the artists’ strategies.
