Home to 7,609 North Carolinians, Brevard is a small town in Transylvania County, an area otherwise known as “The Land of Waterfalls.” In Brevard, and the surrounding towns that make up Transylvania, there are 250 waterfalls defining the landscape. The geography can also be characterized for the rich soil, abundant game, and natural resources, all of which were appealing to the Scots-Irish immigrants who chose to settle in the area in the early 1800s. Most of the immigrants were farmers, so the land that is mostly forest today was farmland at a time. The population had grown sufficiently by 1860, so the residents decided to establish a town.
With the help of a fifty-acre donation from three residents, a town site was erected and Brevard came into being. Around 1900, a rail line was built through Brevard, which brought wealthy families to the area for vacation and transported timber logged in the area to saw mills. Modern industry was introduced years later with the establishment of a paper manufacturing plant.
Since the early introduction of the railroad in Brevard, the town’s reputation as a scenic destination has grown. The city’s population has even grown 12 percent over the past 12 years. As it seems to be the case with western North Carolina towns, recognition is growing, so it is expected that the towns will as well.
