Bat Cave is an unincorporated community located along Highway 64, just beyond the town of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock State Park. The community was named for the cave in the nearby Bat Cave mountain which is inhibited by thousands of bats. The mile-long bat cave system is known as the largest granite fissure cave in North America.
Bat Cave is in Henderson County but is more broadly defined as being part of the Asheville Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA), which is an area comprised of four counties in North Carolina. As an unincorporated community, Bat Cave’s population is not explicitly recorded; it contributed to the population of 370,000 that makes up the MSA. The area can be characterized as being part of a typical mountain county, consisting of mountain ranges, isolated peaks, level valley areas, and a rolling plateau. Bat Cave is located in the area of lower elevation in Henderson County; the elevation near Bat Cave is around 1,400 feet, where some areas of the county are as high as 5,000 feet. Though there isn’t much in the town, it can be appreciated as a quiet retreat outside of more populated Chimney Rock and Lake Lure. To get to know Bat Cave even more, a stop in the Old Cider Mill and Applesolutely gift shop is a must.
