Visual Journalism

Journalism in the Age of Data is an interesting documentary. The film examines the evolution of information graphics  and data visualization. These are topics that, though I use or come across on a daily bases, have never resinated as important to me in journalism. However, I can admit when I am completely wrong.

With the advancement of technology one can see how data visualization will play a major role on how we delivery content now and in the future. Data visualization and motion graphics are the “next-generation” to information graphics. With a society which is  spoiled from high speed internet and interactive media everywhere one looks, journalism has to do something in order to keep up with our changing times. Finding a way to visually appeal to readers and make the information delivered understandable is the core of data visualization. According to the movie however, data visualization must still be able to deliver a narrative and not just present a mountain of statistics. Therefore, a new type of journalist must emerge. One who is familiar with visual aesthetics, audience analysis, interactive media and journalism.
