Does art matter?

Of course art matters. I have always been blown away at how works of art can express and stand for more that any form of word. And beyond the “meaning” of art, it is humbling at how beautiful and aesthetically pleasing art can be. I’ve always appreciated art greatly, despite having much talent for many traditional forms of art. So this week, and learning about the characteristics that four major art categories encompasses, was not only interesting but enlightening.

The reason why art is important, especially for students in a program like iMedia, is that art can be found everywhere. Everything we create can be traced back to the characteristics described in formalism, expressionism, realism and post-modernism. The motivations behind making these types of paintings can without a doubt be applied to websites, documentaries and graphic design.

Having knowledge of the artistic approach to artwork can only help us in creating all types of media. We should take all of these approaches and techniques into consideration when we create anything, since anything we create at the very least contains elements of art. We can use artistic approach strategically to help portray a certain message in anything we create.

Art is a very broad term and I think of it as encompassing every form of expression from a sketch to fashion. It is absolutely important in the sense that it is how we express ourselves and also in the sense that it displays the things we think are beautiful.
