The question posed is what is art and does it matter? While the answer is a definition and an unequivocal yes, I would like to alter the question to give you my true feelings on the matter; who are we without art?
The four types of art we are discussing; Realism, Expressionism, Formalism, and Post-modernism are vitally different but provide a true backbone to the growth and beauty of our world. I would even go so far as to say they are manifestations of humans; the realistic side, our emotional expression, our formalistic need for structure, and our duality with a touch of insanity.
As an Imedia student, it is vitally important to know these movements, works, and artists because they represent imagination, creativity, pushing the boundaries, and most importantly are made to inspire. We can use these examples in our own creative process. It gives us an understanding of technical relationships to the human experience, and the many sides to that story.
It is very important to know certain artists and movements in this field because we are in the “creative” industry. Employers will have an extensive knowledge of this subject and expect the same of us as rising professionals. The best way to gain more knowledge in this or any field is to simply read, look, and explore. Satisfy every curiosity and appreciate every form of art for, maybe not its beauty all the time, but its meaning and intent.
I reiterate, who are we without art? We inherently want to create, move forward, and appreciate beauty. When the generations to come look back they will put together an image of us through our art. Art defines us.
