Expectations

For this class, I expect to be pushed out of my comfort zone– both in design and in critiques. I’ve never been the person to doodle in class, mainly because my doodles are horrendous and I’m immediately embarrassed by them. When I was a senior, I was forced against my will to take an Art 1 class by my incompetent high school counselor (yay NBHS!) and amongst my freshman classmates, my work was by far the worst. I’m not being modest. It was horrible. My mother wouldn’t even hang it on our fridge. But 5 years later, I’m ready to face up to the challenge of truly making beautiful things. It helps that this class doesn’t include a pottery section.

When it comes to critiques, I was once detained after a college creative writing course for being far too critical about people’s grammar. I have a serious problem with losing myself in minute details, which removes my ability to see the larger picture.

I’m looking forward to learning from both you and my classmates on how to be better in both of these areas. Gaining a strong sense of design will only help further my skill set professionally and personally and learning how to give constructive feedback that helps make a person’s work stronger (as opposed to making them hate me) will help benefit me once I’m placed in a team or group setting.
