Celebrating Periclean Scholars is coming to Oaks 212 on Thursday, October 10th, at 5:30PM.

The event honors current and past Periclean classes as well as serves as an event to build interest in the current freshman class. Be sure to advertise the event to any and all freshmen! Hors d’oeuvres will be provided for all attendees and current Pericleans will also receive Periclean gear. Look for our digital poster in Moseley!

We look forward to seeing you all there!

’15 Class Progress 9/24

Today the lovely Dr. and Dr. Warner (Bud’s wife, Beth, is also a professor at Elon) hosted our class at their home for dinner. They made lovely lasagnas (one for meat eaters and one for veggie eaters – how accommodating), salad, garlic bread, and an angel food, chocolate and raspberry dessert. It was a really relaxing break from the normal hustle and bustle of our normal Elon weeks. We got to chat and get to know each other better – as well as meet the Warners’ bear of a dog, Archie!

We’re still busy organizing Celebrate, getting really close to deciding on an official Haitian partner organization, and forming our elevator speech.

Thank you for the wonderful and generous hospitality, Dr. Warner and the other Dr. Warner!

Steering Committee Notes 9/26

Big news of the day: a study abroad winter term course for Periclean classes in their respective countries has been approved to count as a capstone GST course!

The AACU Value Rubrics can be a tool when creating Junior and Senior year Periclean class syllabi. It explicitly states many of the hidden goals of Periclean Scholars. We know what’s going on, but it’s important to have a structured plan in writing for accreditation purposes. Action point: go back into your syllabus and edit it to reflect more direct and purposeful connection with learning outcomes.

MMMMJ, the author of a fictional service book titled Missionary, Mercenary, Mystic, Misfit, is going to join us for a Skype conversation one upcoming afternoon. His book focuses on the stages of working in service, and it would be a great conversation for any Periclean to sit in on!

Remember to work on your elevator speech video!

Other reminders:

Letter competition is approaching

Celebrate is Oct 10th!

Talk to Tom about your representatives for the Summit for Transformative Education

Class updates:

’16s: Fundraising idea: Have a Pan Periclean tailgating event for Homecoming. Possibly they could charge a couple dollars for entrance. They were also thinking of screening a documentary and inviting Carol Smith to talk about Namibia. They’re also going to do some team building through pumpkin carving with April! How fun!

’15s: The class is getting really close to identifying their Haitian partner! They’re currently working on getting the necessary permission for an Elon University associated trip, and the new news about the GST course is really exciting. A Haitian dance theatre is also coming for an event  in November and the class will work closely with the dance department to organize and promote. A connection though Woody Pelton’s Peace Corps meetings

’14s: They have a heavy focus on fundraising right now. They’re writing a Community facility Grant (and researching other grants they can apply to) and continuing their monthly grilled cheese and cookie events. They’re also making an Indie Go Go video for a fundraising campaign, and right now they’re narrowing how much they want to ask for and for what projects. Two trips are planned for now: the apple butter festival in two weeks and another trip over fall break to get closer to the community

Steering Committee Notes 9/12/13

The ’14s grilled cheese and cookie event was a success! They ran out of cookies in just an hour into the event and have made the event a monthly happening.

–Remember, Periclean, that whenever you do a fundraising event, grab a poster from the Periclean Corner and spread some info about how class and its mission!

For the ’15s and ’16s: Every class should have two elevator speeches. One for what it means to be a Periclean scholar in general, and another about your particular class’s mission. Mia Watkins is a resource for you. Her job is to do media stuff  for Periclean. She can video tape and put the presentation together for you – she’s a communications student and is proficient in Final Cut, Photoshop, etc. Past videos are on the Pericles website.

Letter competition: Elon is #1 in the southeast. One thing we weren’t ranked as #1 though is writing. We can do better. The quality enhancement program for Elon over the next few years is to focus on writing. The letter competition is part of this focus. It is part of our responsibility to write to officials who have an effect on your focus country. Who is your ambassador? What do they need to know? Every semester, each class should have amazing letters written and sent to officials. The goal is to have meaningful communication with political leaders. We have an archive of letters that have been sent out by Pericleans and the responses that they generated. It doesn’t have to focus on national officials – they could be in the UN, and the state level, etc. Dr. Arcaro can send four letters to nationals – this may turn into an internal competition. Go back to your classes and charge them with this!

Celebrate Periclean Scholars is an event for not only current Pericleans, but also for the current freshmen who may be interested in joining. Each class needs a representative  to speak and give an update about their class. It would also be great to have an elevator speech! If you have an

An alumnus with Periclean significance will be receiving the Young Alumni Service Award at Homecoming! We’re going to make the night into an event! Mark your calendars! Homecoming is on Saturday, November 9th, and we’re going to have a dinner together on the 8th.

Charge to classes: Write 100 words by next Wednesday summarizing what your class is doing. This summary is going to be included in the upcoming newsletter.

’15 Progress – 9/10/13

Dr. Arcaro visited our class today! The first minutes of class were devoted to getting each other caught up on the status of the Summit of Transformative Education, our budget, and creating our elevator speech. Then we delved into the goals and updates of each committee:

PR Goals

inform other students about what the Periclean program is

raise awareness about human trafficking

Tie the events back to NC and in state human trafficking

continue and expand with social media

put together the elevator speech

Haiti Partnership

figure out what we could do with said partner

start building a relationship with the organization

perhaps talk people who have benefited from the organization
US Partners

establish a local partnership with an organization with principles that align with ours

evaluate their organization using RISE

Fundraising

establish our current budget and learn how we can gain easy access to that budget

plan and run approx 3-6 fundraisers, perhaps profit shares and 5k’s

apply for grants once we know what direction our partnership is going

work with other committees to make the fundraisers more successful

Education and Awareness

plan and sponsor several events about our class and Restevek

create presentation for classes that are interested in learning about Restevek in Haiti

work with other class committees

partner with other campus organizations

create a calendar

Team Building

Ideas: Service on the weekends, make abroad packages and send to abroad Pericleans, potluck dinner, brunch, go to cultural events together, movie nights, visit Mt Olive, mentor/mentee dinner, tshirts, survival bingo

Travel Committee

figure out where we can go in Haiti

figure out what it would cost to get there

figure out how we would pay for it

get permission to go and figure out what stipulations are included in that permission

Next week, we’re bringing in individual contracts that will be used to track our progress throughout the semester. These contracts will help us remain focus and attain our goals. It feels like it’s going to be a great semester and we’re excited to see what we can accomplish!

’15 Progress 9/3

Today in class, we made great organization progress. Class members broke up into small committees to tackle individualized goals such as seeking a Haitian partner organization, fundraising, and public relations. Each committee set committee for next week.

We also shared updates regarding upcoming events this fall, including a visit by the Resurrection Dance Theatre of Haiti on Oct 17th, and Celebrating Periclean. Conor Grennan, the author of the class’ common reading for the summer, Little Princes, is also visiting Elon on September 17th. The book spoke about a man’s journey starting an NGO in Nepal after his experience with the country’s child trafficking. Get your tickets!

First Steering Committee Meeting of ’13-’14: 8/29/13

First Steering Committee Meeting of ’13-’14: 8/29/13

Announcements:

  • Organization Fair: We need all hands on deck for recruiting the next class for Mentor Carol Smith! Get the word out there – both at and before the org fair. The next class’s focus country will be Namibia.
  • Periclean Social coming up on September 1st from 4-6PM in Belk Pavilion 208. There will be Indian food at the social as well.
  • Summit for Transformative Education: Weekend of Oct 18-20th. Three Pericleans, one from each Class, will be sent sent to this conference. It’s an opportunity to meet other undergraduates who are doing things similar to us. Dr. Arcaro is meeting with his counterparts at other NC universities to pull together similar groups for networking and to share knowledge and skills. Classes need to decide who wants to go and who can go. One Periclean Mentor has already been funded to go.
  • The Junior class is in charge of planning and coordinating the Celebrating Periclean Scholars event. Tom and Crista generally choose a Periclean alumn to speak.
  • The Blog: A one-stop shop for all things Periclean. Encourage people to bookmark this page and visit it.
  • The Steering Committee meetings’ main function is to facilitate communication and coordination between the different current classes. But after each week or so each class should make an update on the blog including what the class working on this week and action points about what you plan to do in the future.
  • Letters to officials and national competitions: We have not been focusing on sending out letters as much as we could. Each semester all Periclean Classes should strive to have a folder of letters that they have sent out. This could be made into an assignment as it is very concrete and focused. Keep doing research on your country and it’s relationship with other countries. Be on a first name basis with the US ambassador to your country!
  • Handbook: A longterm goal. A subcommittee or separate committee will be formed to update the handbook, which is currently online. The updated copy will be printed and copies will be available in the Periclean corner. The goal is to have this in our hands by the end of the semester and then to update it every year. The handbook goal is very doable – if you have people who have
  • Photos for the Periclean Corner: The pictures in the Periclean Corner haven’t changed in years. Let’s get some new photos in there! The Periclean Corner will be moving soon to the Global Village and we need new decorations to spiffy up the area. Let’s make visitors, alumni, and potential members impressed by our space and let’s make them understand the impact of our work by how we present our space.
  • The CRHP building in Jamkhed, India is now open! This is an effect of between the ’12s work and their documentary, “Health for All.”
  • The ’09s. In Zambia, there is a community of people near Ndola with with Pericleans have worked since 1009. Four of these Habitat houses were built by the Pericleans. A microfinance program has been produced in the community to set up loans, focused on women, to enhance the community and particularly the financial stability of the community. They are working with Voster Tembo, a long-term partner of the area,  and the Zambian Development Support Foundation.
  • Steve Braye has expressed commitment to being the mentor of the ’18s! He was one of the mentors of the first class, who focused on Zambia. His class will be going back to this country. He will also be the interim director while Dr. Arcaro  and Crista are gone this spring.
  • Next Meeting September 12th @ 9:4o.  In two weeks from today, we will have the next Steering Committee meeting.

Class Updates:

The ’14s just came back from their fourth trip to Appalachia. They went to St. Charles, Virginia. They were collecting info for the POD lectures. They talked to Ron Carson, the director of a black lung clinic, which you can read more about on their blog, https://blogs.elon.edu/pericleanscholars/category/class-of-2014-appalachia/. In the future, they will be going to a community event to get a more collective view. Currently, their focus is expanding to connect the three communities that they have worked with. (Note from Arcaro: make sure that you have deliverables for the POD lectures!) The class is also working on bringing in speakers from Appalachia in the upcoming year. A connection was made with a Key Club mentor in an Appalachian high school. They will be working on small projects with the club, including selling local vendors’ art online. (Note: maybe the art can also be sold in the food area of the Global Village?)

The ’15s read Little Princes, by Conor Grennan, over the summer. They are also reading A Crime So Monstrous this semester. Both books provide insight into child trafficking, which is their focus topic in Haiti. Currently, the class is forming committees to address their goals for the semester, including forming partnerships with child slavery organizations in both the United States as well as Haiti.

Class of 2015: 5/14 Class Notes

Over the summer, we will read the same common reading for the Class of 2017: Little Princes. Each of us are responsible for getting our hands on the book and reading it before the start of the fall semester

Right now, it looks like we’re in a good postion to make great strides in the fall. By fall break, we will work towards fundraising, firmly identifying ourselves, and forming relationships with local and Haitian human trafficking organizations. We will read Crimes so Monstrous as well as take a look at the book assigned for this semester, Not in My Town.

In the fall, we will also have a more rigorous grading scheme. At the beginning of the semester, each specific committee will create a set of goals, and part of our grade will stem from accomplishing these goals. We will also have an academic paper due focused on Restavek and human trafficking. The paper will connect our readings, our class progress, and our individual experiences. Remember, we are Periclean scholars!

At this point in time, these are potential focus Haitian organization: Jean Cadet, Restavek Freedom Foundation, Free the Slaves, St. Joseph’s, Restavek Freedom Alliance.

One subcommittee will complete the application for a waiver to lift the restriction on travelling to Haiti.

Fundraising money could be used for plane tickets as well as for our partner organizations!

In the spring, we will have a committee begin identifying a live-in Haitian scholar to stay near Elon and add depth to our project and community. More discussion will come in the next academic year.

Regarding lateral entry. We do not have a decision as to whether we would need lateral entries to keep the same approximate class size, whether we would want lateral entries if several people decide to leave our class, or what redeeming qualities we would look for in our candidates. Dr. Warner will have final decisions from anyone who plans to discontinue their participation by the end of the semester. If a significant number of people decide to leave, we will continue this conversation at that time.

2015 Haiti Class Notes 5/7

As our class forms key documents and searches for partnerships, we cannot limit ourselves by focusing solely on these two objectives. There are many more venues in which we could proceed, such as writing and sending letters to the appropriate organizations and government representatives. The US Ambassador to Haiti, for example. Building relationships in these areas would get our name and cause out to the appropriate audiences, help us find and form partnership organizations, and ultimately reach our goals regarding Restavek.

Now is a great time to reach out again to potential partnerships who may have fallen between the cracks as we focused on building a response template.

We updated our class resume, which has been posted.

Stephanie is beginning to form plans for starting an END IT movement on Elon’s campus. The organization’s mission is to end child slavery worldwide. Building this organization on Elon’s campus would be a great and very well-fit opportunity for our class. Their website and the videos they have posted are excellent, we could definitely learn a thing or two about how to be effective at moving an audience into action. Here’s a link: http://enditmovement.com/

We WILL have class next Tuesday!
