The Dawn Of Our Senior Year

Yesterday, the senior Pericleans met again to strive towards making this year the best one yet.

After having completed our individual SMART goals the previous week, we heard from each committee on what they are hoping to accomplish and move forward with during this semester.

We are excited to begin work on our final elevator speech.  It should be launched in time for Celebrating Pericleans coming up in October.

The planning for our event to be held in February – People, Planet, Profit- is well under way with trendy logos, t-shirts, and speakers being decided upon. It’s all looking awesome!

The LUPE committee is doing wonderful work to find a sustainable volunteer base to support the organization after our cohort walks across the stage in May.  We are looking for a group or organization that is able to keep up with this growing program.

Finally, the Hope for Honduran Children committee is researching fundraising ideas, grants, and more to help support the dorm/training center being built to allow for more boys in the program.  We have some creative ideas on the table and can’t wait to choose and get to planning!

We are thrilled about the way things are moving so far this semester and anticipating another wonderful and successful year!

Back at it! Class of 2016

We are so happy to welcome back our Pericleans who were abroad in the fall! We had members studying all over the world such as London, England, Montpellier, France, and Ecuador. We also had some students participating in Semester at Sea who visited over 10 countries. Before our first official meeting, we spent time together sharing stories, photos, and of course, pizza.

The spring semester is looking to be very busy and important for the Class of 2016! During our first meeting, we covered a range of different topics, but focused mostly on moving forward with our partners. Our focus is not one large project, but multiple small projects where we can make a more sustainable change. We talked over many details pertaining to our partners and took a serious look at good things that were done last semester, and things that need to be improved for the future.

With the majority of our Pericleans back on campus, we are energized and ready to work this semester. We finished our meeting by saying goodbye to one of our classmates, Arianna Brown, who is headed to New Zealand this semester! Good luck Arianna!

Week 7, Periclean Scholars Class of 2016!

This week the Periclean Class of 2016 focused in on some movies related to the problems we are learning about in Honduras and other Latin American countries. We divided into small groups and each group chose a film to watch and analyze for the rest of the class in hopes that we could find a few movies that would benefit the whole class to watch, while learning new information and gaining insight to the problems in these countries. Movies that were watched included, Honduras the War on Children, that described the growing tensions and distrust between adults and children in Honduras. Which Way Home entailed a story of children trying to immigrate to the United States via the train systems. One classmate watched a documentary called Unos pocos con valor and said that this movie shows many positive aspects of Honduras and that amongst all the bad that we hear about, there are good people in the country and not everyone is corrupt. While we still have many movie presentations to listen to, the class as a whole has really enjoyed this assignment. Each group has picked out lessons to learn and scenarios that are applicable to our current and future work in Honduras. Our mentor April described her difficulty in finding movies made in Honduras. This only encouraged us to think about the possibility of creating a positive documentary, promoting the good in Honduras that is rarely found on screens or in news. In other news, we are in the midst of writing individual mid-semester reviews and re-evaluating our work in the classroom for the Periclean Scholars. This important assignment will help us reflect and re-focus on our work and hopefully lead to some productive goals for the rest of the semester.

Class of 2016: The Future Looks Bright

By:  Erin Robertson, Juliana Sierra, and Liam Davitt

The Class of 2016 Periclean Scholars finished up our first semester on Friday with group project presentations.  Each group or individual was assigned the task of creating a sustainable final project that the class could use to its benefit.  Here are a few examples of what we’ve been working on this semester:

  • Lauryl Fisher focused on creating social media for our class.  She created a Tumblr, Twitter, website, and forum.  All of these have information about our Periclean class and are updated by Lauryl in order to promote our work and reach potential partners.
  • Kerianne Durkin formulated a research project and paper that she presented to us on Friday.  She did extensive research and reading on the recent Honduras election.  Through this she learned all about the political system of Honduras and helped keep our class as a whole updated on the situation.
  • Aidan Dyer presented ways in which we can better our class organization.  He conducted research to find the best methods of collaborating and being efficient.  In the future, we will decide if we want to use this proposal or not in order to create more efficient meetings and set clear goals.
  • Christian Gilbert, Meredith Berk, and Juliana Sierra spent the past few weeks trying to raise money to use for a trip to Honduras in January.  They will use this trip to gather important insight and experience for our class. We just found out today that this trip has been approved by the University, so the group will officially be going!!
  • Caroline James and Savannah Peery presented a project that they will be working on during Winter Term.  They seek insight from our peer students on what they think the financial aid situation is like in the United States.  There will more information on this during Winter Term!
  • Nick Cianciara, Erin Robertson, Megan Griffin, and Caley Mikesel worked on establishing relationships with University students in Honduras.  They presented interesting transcripts and insights from the students they talked to and created an important excel sheet containing contact information of everyone they talked to.

This is just a sneak peek of what we have been working so hard to accomplish. As the semester comes to a close our class says goodbye for the break, and wishes luck to those who are going abroad. We look forward to a new semester that awaits us with a bright and promising future. With some students continuing the planning to go to Honduras, and others working more on the development of our class project we anticipate coming back together in the Spring and continue on with the work we are doing.

Thanks for reading about our semester!  More to come in the Spring!
