Powerhouse Books – The Musical
The main character is a guy who is setting the stage by talking to his assistant in a bookstore. He then sees a old flame and everything changes. When he begins singing everything morphs into color, it is like when he sees her the world is as it should be. The light to the darkness, the color in the haze. Whenever they are not singing, it is in black and white. It is almost like color is expressing his emotion. Its a really cute love story. It kind of shows the awkward stages of relationships. Giving voice (song) to our inner turmoil and thoughts during the stages of romance or interest. The slow motion during the musical bits leave the viewer with the impression of time moving at a different pace while they sing. It gives off a mystical vibe as they let it all out. I love the camera action, as they follow the actors movements but also their eyes. So we feel like we are seeing from their point of view. The acting is well done too, there is chemistry between them and I feel their tension. He craves, she begins the story as a little hesitant and even a little bitter but as the words begin to flow, her eyes change and you can actually see her transformation into want. But in the end she has to choose and she left. It was a poignant story and in 9 minutes I felt I saw a story that had true depth and character.
Circles
This was a weird set up. There is no explanation, just a random conversation between two guys marked as different with haunting music. Interestingly enough there is not much of a story but the compilation of the same few angles give off hints of movement through time. The ending portion with the showing of the little ghost face on the poster was anticlimactic, it only had a mild amount of impact because of the music. Music gives things significance. However, the drawing of the ghost face was kind of kindergarden, so it didn’t have the impact I felt it could have had. It was trying to be comical with the disbelieving friend, serious with the philosophical rant of the protagonist, and random with its lack of function. Overall, it was not a successful piece however pretty the building and video was, it lacked significance and true substance.
