PICATOWERS (Richardson)

This series of films is definitely strange. I couldn’t tell you what Pica Towers is about, and it’s definitely not what I was expecting from the title. Dating back to my high school days, I have always known “picas” to be units of measurement, and as nothing else. So this mini-horror series came out of nowhere.

The storytelling techniques rely heavily on slow exposition and dark, subtle humor. There are slight details that link the stories together, a gunshot and a dead body. These link the seemingly unrelated segments together and alert the viewer that these stories not only take place in the same universe, but also in the same location and during the same time frame. Since this is an animation piece, the cuts and framing can be more precise, and they are. These are the benefits of animation. From a filmmaking perspective, the director and animation team use striking visuals to their advantage.
