Rick Morris is the classic model of an alternative artist with a lot of viewpoints and even more creativity. I chose him because I saw a bit of myself in his words, thoughts and progression. He began as an illustrator, making doodles of all varying shapes, sizes and types. I found some of his sketches looked very similar to my massive amount of classroom doodles. It gives me hope :P. I also agree with his point that being able to draw gives you a certain amount of leverage because you understand physical form or the overall physicality of what you are creating. However, I think the biggest gift or leverage one can have is storytelling. Morris touches on the subject of storytelling, but I think that this ability especially if used creatively can be the means from which all creative process can garner success.
His inspiration section as also very interesting. It struck a chord. Funny enough that is what he talked about how certain art whether it be the form, shape or color, can influence him. And in particular how a piece can speak to someone specifically. I feel that way all the time, why does some art speak to us and other don’t or why do we connect fundamentally with some art and not others. Is it fate, is it taste, or simply timing. Either way, art has the ability to connect with us just as people do and from that influence our very mood and action. Something so simple and so overlooked, but so important.
When he said that he was also inspired by lovers was almost too much for me to believe. He is very similar to me in so many ways, I am coming to realize because I find profound inspiration from people who are in love. Love is one of the most beautiful, incandescent emotions we can express and is utterly fundamental to our core. When I see or I guess Morris sees love manifested in its physical form, is almost a spiritual experience. It makes you want to write poetry, put brush to canvas, or simply bask in the bright white energy that love emits with undisguised totality. What can be more inspiring than that?
Something I found very useful was the section of freelancing. I have been considering this myself. I am having a personal crisis with trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. I love the freedom of freelancing much like Morris does, he likes being a self made man. He talks about the freelance spirit and how those spirits need to conquer the fear factor and not be afraid to take life on by themselves. I want to be that brave but sometimes its all about luck. Luck in stumbling across projects, stumbling across the right projects, and so forth and so on. Who knows what the future will hold for me but Rick Morris is a very interesting guy who I find has characteristics that I both admire and find myself wanting to match.
The Lynda video didn’t have any of his works so I looked him up. He is now a creative director at Noble Assassins. I really liked his videos from his illustrations to his awesome taste in music and tempo. All of his stuff has great rhythm.
