30 conversations on design

These were interesting videos to watch to get the perspective of professionals on what inspires them and what design is good for. I watched a variety of examples from both years but a few stood out for me. I looked first for someone I recognize and respect such as a David Carson or Paula Scher. Per usual, Paula Scher was used as an example. It was interesting to hear her say that design doesn’t always solve problems. Design is used for a variety of things and it is not always the answer.

I liked Tony Hawk’s input as well. Tony Hawk is obviously most known from his skateboarding career as opposed to anything design related. However, I follow him on instagram and he is also friends with designers and has a sense of design. I thought his video was relevant in asking what is the most influential design. He states that Apple products in general, (thanks Jony Ive) are the most influential.  He states that they transformed things that were thought of as only business products into something fun and exciting to use. Computers and phones are now something we are proud to own and now debate which ones are better. This has definitely changed society all because of the design of the products. I agree with this.

I also enjoyed the video by Steven Heller who spoke about the Michelin Man. This was important because it is recognizable and the icon has longevity. I feel that is something to think about when designing. Making something that can be easily recognized but also designing something that can last, not just for a short time or some fad.
