Data Visualization

As an avid reader of the BBC news I am always impressed by their information graphics on current news and how they break down intricate information into graphics and make it interactive and easier to understand. I think this is common now since most news sources are online now, data infographics have become common. The video goes into talking about how there’s currently a trend of infographcis and how it’s more coding based currently but also has to be appealing to the user or it’s just skipped over.

Amanda Cox seems to be the perfect example of a ‘non-designer’ being able to create appealing infographics. With a background in statistics she’s able to sort through topics that are pretty intense and break them down into bigger picture ideas for the general news reader to understand. I know, personally, I also enjoy these interactive graphics when reading papers that include maps, graphs, 3-d models, etc. to help understand the topic I’m reading about it. It typically starts on the macro level and lets me personalize down to where I live or what demographic I am, which is awesome and something that has never been available before.

I think the big take away from this video was that when all these forms of media are working together, you can make something appealing to broader audience than the same information displayed in text and numbers. I think this is increasingly true with our society not reading traditional forms of news and being pretty impatient when it comes to delivery of information in general.
