Journalism In The Age Of Data – Wylie

Data visualization is an interesting concept. I’m going to visualize Data right now.

See what I did there?

Lame Star Trek references aside, this video offered some great insight in the field of data visualization. Watching the video and trying to make my infographic has shown me that it is not something easy to do. To communicate something as clear and precise as data in a way that is both easy and accessible is a challenge for even the most experienced graphic designers.

I did not realize how many creators of infographics now come from a background in math and statistics until the video pointed it out to me. It makes sense, given the sheer amount of data that goes in to infographics, but I guess I never put ‘2 and 2 together’ until now. Having statisticians behind infographics ensures that the data being produced will be accurate and informative, and having designers work along side them will ensure that the inforgraphic is eye catching and appealing. Really, it’s a combination that works extremely well together.
