Story of Cosmetics and Bottled Water

Why are we killing ourselves?

That’s the question that lingers in my head after watching two of the “Story of Stuff” videos. It’s truly amazing and  sickening the amount of toxic products that are in everyday products. Like why? Why are companies still putting chemicals proven to cause cancer in baby soap? Is the “bottom line” more important than polluting the world to a point that ruins it for future generations? I honestly can’t fathom how a conscience person with common sense could haphazardly make products like this.

Okay, enough of the rant.

The production quality of the videos was outstanding. They were concise without skimping on the key points. The illustrations were beautiful and made perfect sense. The narration was carefully scripted and convincingly executed.  Videos that make use of information and graphic design have always interested me and are a great twist on traditional media forms.

I’ve been looking forward to the section of class where we focus on information graphics. We live in an age of enormous amounts of quantitative and qualitative data. Complex ideas and issues can be broken down and communicated succinctly through information graphics. This is an area of great opportunity for storytellers.
