‘Trying to Look Good Limits My Life’

The two artists I choose to watch were Lawrence Weiner and Stefan Sagmeister. Each of the videos was beautiful shot and showcased some of their works. Both of the artists seemed very self aware and understanding about how their designs communicated and the elements that constructed them. I had to laugh when Weiner mentioned he despised Helvetica for being authorize but agreed with him as we stated it didn’t adapt itself always. Sagmeister was much more inspiring to me. He stated that he doesn’t like talking about projects too much because he feels less inspired to actually do them. I have experienced that problem before so I understanding wanting to limit creative conversations once an idea is developed. I also liked Sagmeister kept a diary once a week so he could reflect on what was a success and a failure. Not understanding your own process of creation and their results can be a very dangerous thing for a designer.

While their styles are very different, both are clearly more than designers- they are artists as well. It is possible to be both but sometimes people limit themselves to only one role. Thinking outside of traditional means allows for individuality and infinite possibilities of creation.
