I thought the artist series videos were very interesting and it was good to hear from these different artists about their motivations and their way of thinking about art.
The specific ones I really enjoyed were Mark Romanek, David Carson, and Paula Scher. I enjoy Mark Romanek’s work and I liked hearing how he described his art. One thing that stood out for me was when he said, “At the end of the day, the only thing that’s really important is somehow emotionally engaging people.” I think that can contribute to any kind of artist work whether it be film, design, writing, etc. Paula Scher had a unique style where she basically illustrates with type. I like her work and thought it was pretty cool in her approach to designing where the idea/art should come right away. David Carson seems to be the rule breaker in the design filed. It seems that one main rule of design, especially when using type, is to make sure it’s legible. David Carson throws that out the window. His designs end up being very creative and very different from anything else I’ve seen but I do like it.
“There’s this one moment where you figure it out and you get it and you think it’s going to be the best thing you ever did. And it’s really really exciting and I never get over it.” – Paula Scher
I feel like that’s something we’ve experienced before and it really is a fun feeling. When you can look at something you’ve made and say, “Yes. That’s it.” I enjoyed seeing how other artists work and think from this artist series.
