Indulgent and Intuitive

For the artist series, I watched a couple of the videos. I first looked at David Carson, because after watching Helvetica I was pretty intrigued by his ideas. After hearing what he said in this video, I definitely enjoy his perspective on design. I really like that he thinks design needs to show personality of the designer and that designers need to be completely absorbed in their work. Also, in Helvetica he mentioned how to communicate through typography and he stays true to that concept by discussing how his point through design is to interpret, rather than to make things pretty. His perspective seems pretty unconventional but I am really interested in the work he has done.

Then I watched Paula Scher. One of the most interesting things she said was about how everything is very instinctual/intuitive for her. She said that if she doesn’t get something right on the first try, then she does on the second. And if she doesn’t get it right on the second, then she never gets it right. I think that can just show how well she knows and understands design. I wish I could get things right on the first, or second, or even third try. Also, I found it really cool when she was describing that a computer for a designer should be a lightbox rather than something where you type out a design.

These two designers are so different, but there is so much I can learn from both of them. While their approaches to design vary, I think they both have very important ideas when it comes to studying the design process.
