Helvetica

“It’s not damaging or dangerous.”

Something about that statement stuck with me after watching “Helvetica.” The arguments for and against this timeless font struck me in many different ways. I typically view myself as being interested in very simple and minimalist designs, which ultimately lends to my appreciation for Helvetica.

I believe the quote above says a lot about the font. Because of its design I believe Helvetica can be used in many forms whether someone is aiming for a classy or sophisticated look or for something more mainstream, or potentially low-end. The font seems to take on the value of its subject – something I find very intriguing.

On the opposite side of the spectrum, I understand the viewpoint of some typographers and designers that it’s a boring font that doesn’t evict expression or emotion. Unlike many, I appreciate Helvetica but also have an affinity for many other font designs, ones that would be more expressive. It’s not an either or type of scenario for me, as it portrayed so many in the documentary
