“Don’t confuse legibility with communication.”
What does Helvetica say? What is it capable of conveying?
Nothing stood out to me in this documentary quite like David Carson’s segment. I want to meet this guy. His approach to typography and design in general remind me very much of Shelley Jackson’s “Stitch Bitch.” Experiment and explore– don’t be afraid of where your thoughts, responses, and emotions carry you. Fonts like Helvetica, as Carson literally points to on paper, obscure meaning, almost as if they’re swallowing it. Writing a piece about hypertext written in linear fashion would be tantamount to wrapping it up in a boring, neat little Helvetica bow.
Make me work for it. Give me complicated, hell, give me crazy, blister my brain and I’ll respond in kind.
