Lowered Expectations

I’m just kidding. I don’t really have lowered expectations about this class, I just always think of the “Lowered Expectations” skit on MadTV when I hear the word expectations.

I’m really excited about this class. In undergrad I did not take any art courses, but I still appreciate visual aesthetics and how important it is in design, marketing, branding, and more. For example, office logos. One of the things I hated about my last job was our office logo.  It was a compass, which I understand (even though I still think it is an overused and unrealistic image for office branding), but I never understood the colors.  Why did an innovative and brand new office at Wake Forest University choose mauve? Who chooses mauve for anything, other than blush for 70 year old women?! I really, really hated the logo (you can hate it too here) and from the moment I saw it I should have realized that I wouldn’t fit in.

I hope that this class helps me expand my knowledge of visual aesthetics, learn to create aesthetically pleasing work, and recognize the hard work of other artists. Also, while I will probably initially hate it, I’m looking forward to my class critiques.  It’s a great (and sometimes rare) opportunity to get constructive criticism from other artists. I know the critiques will help me grow and develop and am excited to see my work at the end of the class.

Also, I’m really looking forward to using my drafting table. It was kind of a process to put it up. Check it out here.
