Introduction

Hey ya’ll! I’m Micalah, and I’m a senior sociology major, no double major or minors here. I signed up for this course because I’ve come to realize that for many of the social issues I’m interested in, like racial injustice, women’s rights, and climate change, I’ve learned to care about them largely through a U.S.-centric lens. However, I know these issues have tremendous global impact and need to be addressed on a global scale as well as a national scale, so taking this course will allow me to take the next step in learning about how these issues play out on the global stage. My COR 110 class was about the globalization and global impact of soccer, which was quite interesting and helped me to think a lot more outside the box of the U.S., but learning about others’ experiences in COR 110 made me realize that the Global Experiences courses don’t really help the majority of students understand what a “global citizen” is or how to be one, as much as Elon emphasizes it’s importance. I’ve taken related classes in sociology, anthropology, and political science/policy studies, including social stratification, criminology, anthropology of the everyday, race, ethnicity, and politics, and intro to policy studies.

Also, I’m the one on the right in the photo. Yes, I’m a twin. Surprise!
