Taylorsville

Taylorsville is similar to Mocksville in that it appears to be what one would consider a typical American town: suburbia, tree-lined roads, and small businesses.

J.M. Bogle, William Matheson, and James James donated the land that comprises Taylorsville; the three men’s donations, mostly of woodland, totaled 46.75 acres. The road from Statesville to Morganton passed through the town’s Southern edge. When the land was rectified, a commissioner and treasurer were appointed to plan the town’s layout and sell lots in order to fund construction for a courthouse and jail. A total of 62 lots were sold over the course of 10 7 months, with the total of money raised amounting to $6,674.75. The town was named Taylorsville in honor of General Zachary Taylor, a general serving in Mexico at the time.

Once Taylorsville was established, a commission of Alexander County identified Taylorsville as the center-most location where the seat of justice should be located. The small town, including only 2 square miles, is home to approximately 2,000 residents, a growth of over 16% since 2000.
