For Highway 64, Manteo makes a lasting impression as the last stop on the east end due to it’s great historic tragedy and the charming community that has built up from it. First discovered in 1584 by the English and named for a Native American from the Croatans tribe, Manteo is known as the Lost Colony due to the disappearance of it’s first colonists between 1587 and 1590 in which English supplies were delayed. From this tragedy, tourism attractions have blossomed into the form of the nation’s longest-running symphonic drama at the Waterside Theatre: Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, Paul Green’s The Lost Colony. Drama aside, the Elizabethan Gardens provide a scenic walk, Roanoke Island Festival Park hosts shows, and the inner town of Manteo was in the top 10 United States wedding destinations, according in Travel Channel.
