Introduction

Hello! My name is Katherine Evans and I am currently a senior majoring in Sociology at Elon University. During my time at Elon I served as the Treasurer, Vice President, and President of Elon College Democrats. Additionally, I worked in the Writing Center and participated in Elon’s Design Thinking Studio. I chose to take this course because I am truly interested in learning what it means to be a global citizen. Additionally, I am fascinated by the topic of aid workers and was lucky enough to work with Dr. Arcaro for my senior seminar research project, which focused on whether strong anti-immigrant political and social rhetoric influences trust between immigrants and aid workers.

My COR 110 class, taught by Professor Ahmed Fadaam, focused on the Arab Spring. First, we learned the history of the region now referred to as the Middle East. Next, we learned about the contemporary Middle East, the struggles each country faces, and the influence of western nations on the current instability of the region. Finally, we discussed the Arab Spring and the influence of social media in sparking each revolution.

While I have not taken any courses that are directly relevant to this course, I have taken a plethora of Sociology courses including: Rethinking Race, Sociological Theory, Sociology of Criminology, Sociology of Suicide, and Sociology of Business and Culture. Additionally, I am taking American Government this semester and I am excited to see the intersection between Sociology and Political Science.

I’ve included a song by Sebastian Kole called “Love’s On The Way.” I find this song incredibly powerful, sad, and also uplifting. Take a listen!
