A1: Introductions

Introductions

Sometime before our class first meets February 4th please take the time to introduce yourself. You might consider including:

  • Class year, major(s), significant program involvement, relevant extra-curricular activities, and -importantly- why you signed up for this course.
  • Describe your COR 110 class, listing the major topics you covered some of the areas that interested you the most.
  • Describe other classes you have taken that may in some way be relevant to this course (international studies, pol sci, sociology, etc.)

You are encouraged to add a photo of yourself and a video link (note: my definition of exemplary global citizen starts at about the 2:30 mark) that is meaningful to you to give us all a deeper sense of who you are.

This post will count toward your class participation grade.

Please post under Assignments/Assignment 1 before you Publish.

Goal of this post:  To allow us to know each other better and thus lead to more engaging and meaningful interaction on our threaded discussions and other interactions during the course.

Hi everyone! My name is Deirdre Fairley and I am a senior graduating following this final semester. I am a marketing major. I signed up for this course mainly because I needed one more advanced study in order to complete my requirements to graduate. I thought that this course sounded very interesting because I enjoy listening to the news and remaining updated on social issues taking place around the world. I took Diversity and Social Justice as a COR capstone course and I learned to open my mind and think in different ways to understand many different viewpoints, which I really enjoyed. In addition, I traveled to Asia for a J-Term course called Business in the Pacific Rim, where we went to Siem Reap, Cambodia and learned about the civil war and genocide that took place there. It made me curious to find out more about social work and helping those affected by social injustices around the world. I am looking forward to learning all about that during the semester!

Hello all! My name is Mackenzie Martinez, I am a sophomore Anthropology and Spanish double major with a minor in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I am involved in the Latinx Hispanic Union (LHU) and Periclean scholars. The reason I signed up for this course is because I am passionate about making the world a better place and this course sounded like a good place to learn how to do that. During my Core 110 class, we talked a lot about migration (both economic and social), international terrorism, and a bit about poverty interventions. All of these topics were very interesting to me and the last one in particular. I have taken a few anthropology classes that I think will help to set the groundwork for this class. In addition, I took an introduction to WGSS last semester which I will give me a good perspective on the sex trafficking topic.

Hello, my name is Dan Soracco. I am a Sophomore, and a Public Health major. I signed up for this class because I think the course sounds very interesting and something that I am interested in. I am interested in global health and positive global change as well. In my COR 110 class, we talked about different world issues, most of them all being connected to sex trafficking and the war on drugs. I was fascinated about how many issues there are in the world that are not as addressed and commonly known as they should be. I believe in raising attention to issues that are affecting people around the world, and I feel that this course will help me become better at that. I have taken an introductory sociology class, and have taken multiple public health classes that I feel are relevant to this course. Attached below is a video of when I went to Jordan as a medical volunteer:

Hi. My name is Kaela Lane and I am an Exercise Science major and a member of Chi Upsilon Sigma National Latin Sorority Inc. I signed up for this class because I am interested in learning more about current issues and my role in them whether they are near or far. In my COR 110 class, I learned about major drug problems in Colombia, and the many reasons and detailed descriptions about people leaving Mexico to come to the United States. The part that interested me the most were the stories about why people were leaving Mexico and the sacrifices they were making. One class that I took in the fall was Gender Issues in Education. Throughout this course, we looked at the education systems throughout the world and learned about how different situations, even ones that may seem small to us, effect the access to education in certain areas. I think this class might be relevant to this one because as we will be talking about people and circumstances all throughout the world, this past class did the same but specifically looked at education.
