Zach Wahls, An Inspiration

Zach Wahls was they keynote speaker at Intersect: Diversity and Leadership conference this year. He spoke on his experiences and about his life being raised by two lesbian parents. Wahls was conceived using artificial insemination. On January 31, 2011 Wahls addressed the Iowa House Judiciary Committee in a public hearing about the proposed constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage in Iowa. Continue reading

Snacking on Leadership, March 14th

The first “Snacking on Leadership,” a Center for Leadership-sponsored event designed to enhance students’ leadership skills, was held Thursday, March 14 from 4:15-5:15pm. This event marks a transition in monthly events from Leadership for Lunch, which was held during the 12:15-1:15 time period, to a time slot better suited to accommodate a greater number of students. Strengths Workshop, March 7th

The Center for Leadership was lucky to have Pam Brumbaugh, Director of Experiential Education at Elon University, present her first Strengths Workshop yesterday evening. Brumbaugh inspired the LEAD Program participants who attended the workshop to focus on their strengths and to encourage themselves in their ventures: “You need to be your best cheerleader.” Continue reading

Silvia Bettez Workshop, Intersect 2013

If you could make a scene of what your first leadership experience was like, how would you position the people?  If no words could be spoken and no movements could be made, what would it communicate?  These were the questions we were challenged to answer as a part of Silvia Bettez’s workshop Using Theater Techniques for Transformative and Social Justice.  As a volunteer, I entered the workshop just planning on following my duties and listening to a presentation, but what I actually encountered was much more than that. Dr. Danieley on Elon Presidents’ Leadership and Legacy

Dr. Danieley delighted attendees at the February 28 Leadership for Lunch by speaking about leadership traits exhibited by various Elon presidents. Participants first enjoyed a catered lunch of lasagna, salad, garlic bread, and brownies before listening to Dr. Danieley as he highlighted the specific leadership styles of former presidents Rev. William Staley and Leon Smith, and current president Dr. Leo Lambert.

2013 Intersect Conference

The second annual Intersect: Diversity and Leadership Conference was held on Elon’s campus last weekend. The two-day conference, co-sponsored by Elon’s Multicultural Center and Center for Leadership, focused on the theme of “Leadership through Diversity and Social Justice”. A total of 160 individuals registered for the conference including students and staff from a variety of schools such as Appalachian State, Methodist University, North Carolina A&T, NC Central, Randolph College, and University of North Carolina Greensboro. February Capstone Dinner

We had our first Capstone Dinner of the semester this past Monday! Turnout was not as quite as high as we hoped but everyone that attended enjoyed themselves. We began the night with a few introductions and brief announcements about upcoming requirements for the semester. Everyone then enjoyed a pasta dinner, while chatting with the people at their table about legacy projects, current classes and life after Elon.

Understanding Myself As A Leader

The title of “leader” is an honor, symbolizing power and influence. Striving for this title, I believed, was the ultimate accomplishment – the quintessential sign of my knowledge and ability. To achieve this pinnacle I demanded myself to be infallible, creating unrealistic expectations and as a result, I failed. These disappointing moments fostered insecurities in my potential, causing me to doubt my worthiness of the title “leader.” Continue reading
