The first “Snacking on Leadership,” a Center for Leadership-sponsored event designed to enhance students’ leadership skills, was held Thursday, March 14 from 4:15-5:15pm. This event marks a transition in monthly events from Leadership for Lunch, which was held during the 12:15-1:15 time period, to a time slot better suited to accommodate a greater number of students. The inaugural event featured seasonal snacks (St. Patrick’s Day-themed rice crispy treats and popcorn), and a presentation by Ashley Pinney, who is a Senior Career Advising Fellow from Elon’s Student Professional Development Center.

The focus of the March 14 event was “Marketing Your Leadership Experiences,” which is a topic many Elon students find relevant as they near graduation or interview for summer internships. Pinney’s interactive presentation challenged students to brainstorm ways in which they have grown in the past year, identifying things such as improved communication skills, flexibility, and public speaking. Next, students completed mock interviews with one another, using a template provided by Pinney of common interview questions. Students commented on the realistic nature of the interview questions, and the value of learning how to best tackle the tough questions often presented by potential employers.

The next Snacking on Leadership will be held Thursday, April 18 from 4:15-5:15pm in Oaks 212. Join us as we kick off Pay It Forward Week by hearing from Burlington resident and professor of Sociology Dr. Bernard Curry, who will speak about how to better bridge the gap between Elon University and the greater Burlington community.
