The second annual Intersect: Diversity and Leadership Conference was held on Elon’s campus last weekend. The two-day conference, co-sponsored by Elon’s Multicultural Center and Center for Leadership, focused on the theme of “Leadership through Diversity and Social Justice”. A total of 160 individuals registered for the conference including students and staff from a variety of schools such as Appalachian State, Methodist University, North Carolina A&T, NC Central, Randolph College, and University of North Carolina Greensboro.
Participants were challenged to explore the cross-section between power & privilege, oppression, social change, and organizational development through workshops and keynote speakers Zach Wahls, and Dr. Silvia Bettez.
Wahls, a 21-year old student from Iowa spoke on family values and moral character from his experience growing up with two mothers. Dr. Bettez dove deeper into the meanings of power & privilege and how we live those words every day – especially in our education system.
Although the weather was dreary, participants came ready to open their minds, learn, and discuss the multiple foundations and aspects of diversity and leadership.
