SAS Visit

Today, we visited the SAS office in Carey, NC.  SAS produces analytical software that helps companies keep inventory and track sales and revenue, but then it also helps process the data and trends to help make more informed and effective decisions regarding stock, distribution, and product research and development.  They were founded out of NC State where they analyzed agricultural date for the USDA and their current CEO is Dr. Goodnight.  It is a privately held company who gives its employees significant benefits and liberties, but receives high amounts of productivity and creativity in return.  This is also emphasized in the statistic that SAS has a 4% employee turnover rate as opposed to the 15.5% industry average, which saves them both time and money/resources

To answer the first of Drucker’s questions: “What is their mission?” their presentation titled their function as “Software Solutions” for other organizations.  SAS has employees in 55 different nations, with an office in France that I have visited.  Also, SAS encourages its employees to pursue their passions and integrate them with the business.  You can see this philosophy with Ed Summers, a blind SAS employee who developed a text system/program for blind users.

S  AS has a very diverse service range, creating/developing software for small businesses as well as large retailers such as Ralph Lauren.  SAS can provide analytical/data-mining software for almost any “modern” business.

What do SAS’s customers value?  First and foremost, the low employee turnover rate allows for employees to work on a certain account for long periods of time, even 15 years.  Clients appreciate the consistency and the security of having a long-serving worker.  Also, clients appreciate the accessibility of the products as well as how personal they can be made for a business/organization.
