What is their mission?
Today we were able to hear a presentation about our own university, Elon University. The mission statement of Elon University is “Elon University embraces its founders’ vision of an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit and encourages freedom of thought and liberty of conscience”. Elon has five different commitments that it strives to live up to in order to live up to its mission statement. The five commitments are: to nurture a rich intellectual community characterized by active student engagement with a faculty dedicated to excellent teaching and scholarly accomplishment, to provide a dynamic and challenging undergraduate curriculum grounded in the traditional liberal arts and sciences and complemented by distinctive professional and graduate programs, to integrate learning across the disciplines and put knowledge into practice, thus preparing students to be global citizens and informed leaders motivated by concern for the common good, and to foster respect for human differences, passion for a life of learning, personal integrity, and an ethic of work and service.
Who are their customers?
Elon is a non-profit university. The customers are the students who choose to attend the university and pay tuition. Tuition brings Elon about 140 million dollars a year. The surrounding community is also a customer of Elon University as the school brings a lot of business to the area. Students pay for the education that they receive, and because in and out of state tuition is so high and such a big investment, students expect outstanding educational opportunities that Elon strives to provide.
What do their customers value?
The students of Elon value many different things depending on what their education is focused on and what they want to get out of their time at Elon. Students really value the opportunities that Elon provides them with whether it be study abroad programs or job and internship opportunities. The students of Elon have great faith in where the university is heading and expect a high quality education as the university expands. Elon is constantly rated as one of the nicest campuses in the country and the students really value their campus and how it is kept. Students also appreciate the facilities and technology that Elon provides them with, whether it be the library, gym, or residences. Customers of Elon University value the reputation that the university has and is building on and are please with how the future looks.
What are their results?
The difference between Elon when it was founded in 1889 and today, not only in infrastructure but in reputation, is truly amazing. Elon has expanded tremendously, especially in the last twenty or so years. The school has built new residences, dining halls, and academic buildings and plans on continuing this expansion in the years to come. Elons budget has increased from 33 million dollars in 1993 to 211 million dollars today, allowing this expansion. As Elon has been building on to its campus, more and more students are applying to Elon, and more and more qualified students. Elon increases the number of applicants every year and last year was the highest number of applicants received ever. Elon has gone from being a safety school to a highly competitive, renowned North Carolina University. Elon has also significantly benefited the surrounding community and businesses in the Burlington area. In fact, in 2013 Elon brought in an extra 23 million dollars to the surrounding economy. Elon is very pleased with the path it is on and look forward to a promising future.
What is their plan?
The plan for Elon University is to continue expanding its campus and building on its rapidly growing reputation. Plans for Elon University are made in ten year increments, so they are currently working on the 2009 to 2019 plan. Elon is always trying to improve and advance with these plans, whether it be adding onto a building or creating whole new facilities. The expansion attracts more prospective students and thus increases profit and their budget. Elon wants to add about 50 students each year in admissions as the university continues to expand. For the next few years in the ten year plan, Elon is planning on adding on to the danieley center, building an admission center, building an athletic facility in Danieley, and many other additions that the university and its students are excited about.
