Elon University

Today, our class learned about Elon University and how it operates on the business level. Founded in 1889 as a non-profit business, Elon first president was William S. Long and now today Elon is run by our eight president, Leo Lambert. Elon University spans 620 acres of Elon, North Carolina with approximately 5,500 undergraduate students. Elon is actually owned by the Board of Trustees, who surprisingly only have one employee, Leo Lambert.

Elon’s mission is to embrace its founders’ vision of an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit and encourages freedom of thought and liberty of conscience. In order to fulfill this vision Elon acts upon a set of commitments. These commitments include, nurturing a rich, intellectual community that is surrounded by ongoing student engagement with a dedicated faculty who actively participates in excellent teaching and scholarly accomplishment. They also continue to provide difficult undergraduate curriculum and is surrounded by distinctive professional and graduate programs.

Elon’s customers are primarily the students due to their non-profit standing. Elon is a tuition run school that mainly receives their funds from the students, donations, and grants. Since Elon has such a small endowment compared to other schools, they can not provide such large financial aid packages because their only income is there tuition.

Elon’s customers value everything that makes our school popular. Sustainability, student life and a beautiful campus are just some of the many things that draw students to the school. The students also value a great education where they can build social relationships. Elon provides a great social life and also a great academic environment for all students. It has a great business program, as well as communication, arts and sciences and more.

Elon’s results have been extraordinary, especially in the last few years. This past year Elon has had the ighest amount of tours and applications for the new students for the Fall of 2014 by a large number. Over a hundred new buildings have been built in the last 24 years, and have built 38 new buildings in the past two ears. With the environment in mind, Elon has become more sustainable  and are highly invested in green purchasing and building more efficient buildings.

Elon has very bright plans for the future. From 2001 to 2012, Elon spent 33 million dollars in land acquisition, and intend to continue to expand throughout Elon, North Carolina. The reason they can do this is because they are not land locked, which is a problem for Universities like Chapel Hill, who can only build up. Elon also plans to acquire more restaurants, hotels, and pharmacies to enhance student life. They are also looking to expand the library, build a new convocation center, a new theater next to Moseley, and many more, all which were included in the Strategic Plan we saw today in class. Elon is always trying to improve, which, as a student, I have seen to be very true.
