Elon University

What is Elon’s mission?

“Elon embraces its founders’ vision of an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit and encourages freedom of thought and liberty of conscience.”  To fulfill the vision of their founders, Elon acts upon the following commitments: to nurture a rich intellectual community characterized by active student engagement with a faculty dedicated to excellent teaching and scholarly accomplishment, to provide a dynamic and challenging undergraduate curriculum grounded in the traditional liberal arts and sciences and complemented by distinctive professional and graduate programs, to integrate learning across the disciplines and put knowledge into practice, thus preparing students to be global citizens and informed leaders motivated by concern for the common good, and to foster respect for human differences, passion for a life of learning, personal integrity, and an ethic of work and service.  Founded in 1889, Elon’s core values have remained constant throughout history: close relationships between faculty and students, a culture that supports constant innovation, and a strong sense of community.

Who are Elon’s customers?

Elon students come from 47 states, the District of Columbia and 49 other nations.  As a non-profit organization, Elon brings in revenue solely through students’ tuition, thus making prospective students and their families the university’s customers.  Universities that are tuition-driven from profit differ from those with large endowments, which become permanently restricted money.  Tuition alone brings in about $140 million per year, and the surrounding community also brings a lot of business activity to the school.

What do Elon’s customers value?

Paying for an Elon education is a huge investment in a student’s academic and professional future, and they want to know this investment is going to be worth it in the long run.  With over 200 student organizations on campus, Elon provides endless opportunities for their students to strive and grow. Elon sends more undergraduate students to study abroad than any other master’s-level school in the nation, and was named one of the top three universities in the nation for community service by the federal government’s Corporation for National and Community Service. In addition, 87% of students complete internships, 47% of students hold at least one campus leadership position, and about 25% of students annually work with faculty members on undergraduate research projects.

What are Elon’s results?

Once just a safety school, Elon has grown into a selective, independent university renowned as a national model for engaged learning, along with excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and professional programs. Elon’s beautiful and historic campus is designated as a botanical garden, consistently being ranked one of the most beautiful campuses in the nation.  With the admissions process just recently closing for the 2014-2015 academic year, Elon received its highest number of applications and tours of its history in 2013, with over 10,000 applicants.  With new buildings, more students, and better programs, Elon is adding value to a student’s degree to make it worth more over time.

What is Elon’s plan?

No matter what Elon does, they try to make it better.  With Elon’s Strategic Plan looking at 10 years at a time, we are going to see more buildings and residence halls added to campus, improved and maintained landscaping, improved academic buildings, and extended athletic facilities. Through this strategic plan, our community will affirm our place among colleges and universities known for academic excellence and exceptional student achievement.
