What is Honda’s mission?

Today we had the opportunity to visit Honda Power Equipment Manufacturing Inc. in Swepsonville, NC. We were able to meet with David Werden and learn about the company. The company specializes in manufacturing power equipment such as lawn mowers, pressure washers, and leaf blowers. Honda is a world leader in developing top quality engines for power equipment. Werden told us that Honda does not have an official mission statement but the company focuses on respect for the individual and their three joys of buying, selling, and creating. They strive to satisfy their customer with the highest quality product for the most reasonable price possible.

Who are Honda’s customers?

Honda customers value the innovation and the durability that Honda products have with their power equipment. There are about 3800 Honda Power Equipment dealers selling their products throughout the United States. The only other distributor of Honda products is Home Depot besides national rental companies. There are about 2000 of both the Home Depot stores and national rental company outlets. The real customers are the people that buy the products such as the lawn mowers. Honda sells more products in the spring because that is when home owners prepare for the rainy season and summer.

What does the customer value?

Honda Power Equipment has an outstanding reputation and the customers of Honda expect the best. Honda products are a little more expensive than their competitors but as David Werden pointed out today, “you get what you pay for”. The customers expect the highest quality of product that is durable. The customer really expects a fuel efficient engine that will last them a long time with great use. The customer also expects the products to be readily available when needed. They do not expect to wait for their products, but want the stores such as Home Depot to be fully stocked.

What are the results?

Honda Power Equipment has manufactured over 40 million power products worldwide. Consumer Reports has rated Honda’s lawn mower as the number one product on the market for 9 straight years. The total sales in 2013 were over $284 million. The factory lines for Honda are top of the line and follow a rigorous schedule to meet their demands each day. The company has also expanded to 10 different locations around the world outside the United States. They have had great customer satisfaction over the years and hope to continue on this trend.

What is their plan?

The plan for Honda in the future is to upgrade their products with innovation to make more user friendly, fuel efficient, high quality products. The company is focusing on bringing new products to the market, such as the robotic lawn mower, but also reducing the cost of production on current products to boost their revenue. The company also wants to try and move their products to the areas of the world where they are purchased most. This will reduce the cost of transportation and make it easier for the company. Honda wants to continue to bring in strong revenue and produce the best quality product efficiently looking to a bright future.
