What can Media Services checkout do for you?
At Elon, we are lucky to have a resource on campus where community members can check out equipment to support a broad-spectrum of academic endeavors. And guess what? It’s free! I suspect that some of you may be familiar with our resources and checkout policies, but we have so many new faces joining our campus community this fall that we wanted to give a brief overview.
Where can you find us?
Media Services is located on the first floor of Belk Library. When you come in the front doors, look to your left. Come through the double doors, and voila!
Also, you can always call us at 336-278-6598.
Equipment available for checkout
We have a variety of equipment available to you. Some highlights include:
- Professional-level HD cameras
- Sound systems
- Audio recorders
- Microphones
- LED projectors
- Portable screens
For a complete list of our inventory, please visit our Media Services Equipment page.
Reserving Equipment
There are two ways that you can make a reservation. First, you can use our online system WebCheckout; simply log in using your Elon credentials. Second, you can call us at 336-278-6598 and one of our technicians will be happy to help you.
Checkout Policies
Beginning this fall term, we have adjusted some of our checkout policies in hopes of better addressing community needs. The standard checkout period for all community members is six hours, but there are a few exceptions to that rule:
- Equipment checked out after 2pm Monday-Thursday will be due back at 11am the next day.
- Equipment checked out after 12pm on Fridays will be due back at 12:15pm on Saturday.
- Equipment checked out any time on Saturday will be due back at 5:15pm on Sunday.
- Equipment checked out any time on Sunday will be due back at 11am on Monday.
If you need to arrange a checkout that falls outside of these policies, email Jenn Grimmett at jgrimmett@elon.edu. Please note that student technicians are not authorized to grant checkout extensions.
Also, we have a new overnight return policy. As of fall term 2015, the only equipment that can be returned to the Library Service Desk after-hours are laptops. All other types of equipment must be returned to us during our open hours.
Getting to know the equipment
The idea of self-supporting a project or event can seem daunting if you’re not comfortable with operating the equipment. We completely understand and want to help you to feel confident about your experience. Who knows how to work all of those crazy options on the camera? We do!
If you would like to learn more about available equipment, enhance your equipment operation skills, or talk through the “what would work best?” questions, contact us! We have highly skilled student technicians working in Media Services who are available to help you, so please stop by. Contact Jenn Grimmett at jgrimmett@elon.edu or 336-278-6591 with any questions.
