Greensboro’s Annual Festival of Lights Celebration is scheduled for Friday, December 4th.  While the Celebration will begin at 6:00 p.m. on Friday throughout the downtown area, the police department will begin to close streets as early as 1:00 p.m. on Friday.  Police will begin closing Elm Street at 4 p.m.  Elm Street will turn into a block party stretching from Lee Street to Center City Park. In addition to the lights, the events will include live music, Santa Claus and the city tree lighting at 7:30 p.m. at Center City Park.

If you have an exam scheduled for Friday afternoon or Saturday morning, you should plan to arrive to the law school early.

UPDATE: Common Cause 2016 “Gerrymander Standard” Writing Competition

As you might remember from a previous post, Common Cause is sponsoring a writing competition to identify new legal strategies to end gerrymandering in the United States. With exciting developments in cases coming out of Maryland and Wisconsin, we have decided to update the topic to reflect the opportunities these cases present. Please see details below on how we have adjusted the topic and feel free to distribute this information to your faculty and students. Updates, submission requirements, and information about our 2015 winners are also available at www.commoncause.org/gerrymanderstandard.

Papers Due March 27, 2016

In December 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a unanimous ruling in Shapiro v. McManus allowing a First Amendment challenge to Maryland’s congressional districts to move forward. Separately, a three-judge federal district court panel rejected a motion to dismiss in Whitford v. Nichol, a case challenging Wisconsin’s state legislative Assembly districts. These cases challenging partisan gerrymanders have potentially significant consequences for fair democratic representation. Either could open the door to a ruling against political gerrymandering that leads to its demise.

The Supreme Court has long suggested there is a limit for what is acceptable partisan gerrymandering, but like obscenity, so far the line is undefined and left to courts to know it when they see it. The Court has said that it is willing to hear constitutional challenges to partisan gerrymandering, but existing legal theories have been insufficient to empower citizens and advocates with the tools they need to overturn partisan gerrymanders in court. Common Cause’s 2016 “Gerrymander Standard” Writing Competition is your chance to change that.

For the second year, we invite legal and social science practitioners, scholars, and students to submit papers proposing a new definition of partisan gerrymandering or further developing an existing standard and pairing that definition with an effective legal theory to challenge unfair redistricting plans in court. Winning papers are selected by a distinguished panel of democracy scholars.

Winning Authors Receive:

  • Prize money: 1st place: $5,000, 2nd place: $3,000, 3rd place: $2,000
  • Publication in a leading academic journal
  • Payment of travel expenses to present papers at a national redistricting reform symposium

See submission requirements here.

If you have any questions, contact Dan Vicuna at (213) 623-1216 or contest@commoncause.org.

Lighted Holiday Balls Instagram Photo Contest!

Are the famous Sunset Hills Lighted Holiday Balls a ‘public art installation?’ YES, INDEED!

Celebrate this great holiday tradition by entering our first PHOTOGRAPHY CONTEST!

Action Greensboro and The Public Art Endowment at The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro are partnering to celebrate one of the most beloved annual public art installations in town — the Lighted Holiday Balls that transform city neighborhoods time of year!

And we’re inviting the public to participate in a fun Instagram Photo Contest!

Here’s how it works:

  • Take a photo of — or a selfie with — our local Lighted Holiday Balls
  • Photos should be taken between now and December 20, 2015
  • During this time-frame, post your photos to a public Instagram profile
  • Each photo posted for consideration must include all three of these tags: #GSOLightedHolidayBalls, #soGSO and #PublicArtGSO
  • Photos will be judged by a committee of Action Greensboro and Public Art Endowment representatives
  • A “People’s Choice” prize also will be given to the photo that receives the most “likes” … so share news of the contest with others and get them to vote!

The Grand Prize is an overnight stay at the beautiful O.Henry Hotel (a value of $309!) Additional prizes include generous gift certificates and special deals from Undercurrent Restaurant, 913 Whiskey Bar, 1618 Concepts, Scrambled! Southern Diner, Lindley Park Filling Station, Josephine’s Kitchen Catering and more!
The Lighted Holiday Ball Displays as ‘public art’

Recently, The Public Art Endowment hosted a lecture by the nationally renowned public art expert Jack Becker on The Evolution of Public Art in America. In his talk, Jack pointed out that sculptures — such as the iconic piece of Gen. Nathanael Greene downtown or the Dennis Oppenheim work on the grounds of the Wrangler building — are easily recognized as public artworks. But there are many, many forms of “public art,” he said, and used this slide to illustrate his point:

Learning of Greensboro’s annual lighted ball tradition, Jack pointed out that this, too, is a “public art installation” and should be recognized as such. And he’s right!
So please join us this year as we celebrate the season — and the ingenuity, beauty and creativity of what the residents of Sunset Hills and other neighborhoods have accomplished with their unique public art displays for all of us to enjoy! Take a photo and post it in our contest — and share this fun opportunity with others!
