Scholarship Opportunities

These scholarships offer any student (both graduate and undergraduate) the opportunity of a $1,000 scholarship based on an essay or video submission explaining how lawyers make the world a safer place.

Below is the list of our clients offering scholarships. The scholarships have the same rules and conditions, but they must be applied for individually and are awarded independently of each other. Students are eligible and encouraged to apply for each of the scholarships listed and may receive a scholarship award from one or more participating law firms. Collectively, there is up to $13,000 in annual scholarship awards available.

Title: Safety Scholarship for Students

Details: Submit a minimum of a 1,000 word essay stating how attorneys make the world a safer place or post a video to your YouTube account or post on the law firm’s Facebook page.

Timing: Scholarship submissions are accepted year-round and remain open until August 15th of each year.

Fee: No fee is ever charged for students to apply for these scholarships.

2017-2018 Aaron Swartz Progressive Change Scholarship

The Law Offices of Patel and Soltis would like to announce the 2nd Annual Aaron Swartz Progressive Change Scholarship. Each year we plan to award at least $1,000 to the top essay related to law and activism related to our Firm’s core practices. This award is open to all part-time and full-time law students. Based on submissions we will award up to three awards.

This scholarship was established as a memorial to Aaron Schwartz and his dedication to activism and the boundaries he pushed. Amount for 2017-2018 school year – $1,000 per award up to 3 awards will be made

Criteria:
§ Must be attending an ABA-approved law school for the 2017-2018 school year at least part time.
§ Candidates must submit a 750 to 2000 word essay, not including endnotes upon any subject related to Activism and the Law. Examples would include Immigration reform, Foreclosure Defense, Providing legal resources through technology.
§ All entries will be open for comment on the Focusedlaw.com website.
§ A current resume with contact information must be submitted with each submission.
§ Up to three entries on different topics will be accepted
§ DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSION: Monday, January 6, 2018, by 5:00PM

White Collar Criminal Defense Scholarship

Burnham & Gorokhov, PLLC is pleased to announce our annual White Collar Criminal Defense Scholarship.

While our firm specializes in white collar criminal defense, all of our attorneys have a background in indigent defense, and are committed to the values underlying the Sixth Amendment’s Right to Counsel.  Therefore, for the 2017-2018 academic year, we are targeting this $1,000 scholarship for students who are working for, or plan to work for, a federal or state public defender’s office–in any unpaid capacity.

The application period runs from March 1, 2017 to May 1, 2017.  Only one applicant will be selected to receive the scholarship. Applicants should submit their applications to scholarship@burnhamgorokhov.com. Please read the following for more information.

Application acceptance period:  March 1, 2017 – May 1, 2017
Selection date by: May 31, 2017

Scholarship Eligibility

This scholarship is eligible to applicants who meet the following criteria:

  1. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at an accredited university or other institution of higher learning in the United States.
  2. A minimum 3.2 GPA or 75th percentile class rank, whichever is lower.
  3. Working for, or will work for, a federal or state public defender’s office in any unpaid capacity.
  4. U.S. Citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States.

Application Requirements

Interested applicants should submit the following:

  1. A cover letter addressing all of the eligibility criteria. Please be sure to indicate which federal or state public defender’s office you have worked for or will work in, and in what capacity.
  2. An essay that conforms to the requirements below. (See Essay Topic for more information).
  3. A current copy of your academic transcript.
  4. A copy of employment offer letter or contact information from someone in the public defender’s office who can verify employment.
  5. Recommended but not required: letters of recommendation from current or past professors and employers.

Essay Topic

Please submit a concise essay of 1500 words or less addressing the following topic:

“If you could enact a policy change to the system of indigent defense throughout this country, what would it be and why?”

Selection Process

We will accept applications from March 1, 2017 until May 1, 2017.  From the pool of eligible applicants who submitted completed applications, we will select one individual to receive the scholarship based on his or her academic achievement and written essay.  We will notify the winning applicant by May 31, 2017, and will pay the scholarship in one lump sum.

Scholarship money should be used by applicant for education related expenses.

NPBA Foundation Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship for Second Year Law Students

2017 FITZWATER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

Dear Second Year Law Student:

The Norfolk & Portsmouth Bar Association Foundation is pleased to announce availability of the Elizabeth B. Fitzwater Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $2,500.00 to be awarded in May 2017 to a deserving second year law student who demonstrates a strong interest in practicing law in the public service/public interest sector in South Hampton Roads and who meets the criteria established by the Selection Committee.

The Foundation’s mission is to promote the administration of justice, to educate the public about the importance of law in their daily lives, and to enhance the image of the legal profession in our community. We welcome the opportunity to serve our community by assisting financially those law students who intend to practice in the South Hampton Roads area, becoming leaders in the public service sector of the legal profession and outstanding citizens, following the example set by the late Ms. Fitzwater.

Elizabeth Fitzwater grew up in Portsmouth and earned her undergraduate degree from James Madison University, her MBA from Old Dominion University, and her JD from George Mason School of Law. She died in 2011 at the age of 43 as the result of a car accident. In 1998, Ms. Fitzwater became an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Portsmouth, and in 2007 she joined the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia, in Norfolk, as a Special Assistant United States Attorney, where she continued to practice until her untimely death. In her role as prosecutor, Ms. Fitzwater successfully prosecuted defendants charged with committing violent crimes, drug and firearm offenses, and murder for hire. She was admired by all who knew her and, in the words of her classmates, Elizabeth Fitzwater “was the rare person who inspires you to be a better version of yourself – a better lawyer, a better parent, a better person. We were all blessed to have known her.”

Notre Dame Law School: Smith-Doheny Legal Ethics Writing Competition

Notre Dame Law School sponsors an annual writing competition on the topic of legal ethics

All Students with an interest in legal ethics are invited and encouraged to participate.

The Competition is open to all law students at U.S. and Canadian law schools.

Entries should concern any issue within the general category of legal ethics.

Entries must be original, unpublished work.

Entries must not exceed 50 pages, including notes, on 8.5 x 11 paper, double spaced, and standard font.

Coauthored essays may be submitted.

Submissions will be judged by a panel of faculty of the Notre Dame Law School.

A prize of $2,5000 will be awarded for one winning entry.

All entries must be received before 5 p.m., Friday April 28, 2017.

The 2017 Ms. JD Fellowship

The Ms. JD Fellowship, one of our most popular programs, is now open for applications!

In 2010, Ms. JD partnered with the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession to found the Ms. JD Fellowship.  The Fellowship is Ms. JD’s program to promote mentoring and professional development.  Each spring, Ms. JD selects a group of outstanding second year law students as Fellowship recipients.  In addition to receiving financial support and invitations to ABA and Ms. JD events, each Fellowship recipient is paired with a mentor chosen from among the Brent Award honorees, Spirit of Excellence Award recipients, and ABA Commission on Women in the Profession Commissioners.  Beyond the mentorship, each year, the Fellows tell us that one of the best parts of the Fellowship is meeting the other incredible rising 3Ls.  Many Fellows remain friends long after their fellowship year is over.   To read more about the experience of past Fellows, click here and here.

Here’s what you’ll need to submit to apply for the Fellowship:

1. Resume (Must include a link to your LinkedIn Profile)

2. Unofficial Law School Transcript(s)

3. One paragraph (250 words) answering the question, “There are many mentorship programs for law students; why would you like to participate in the Ms. JD Fellowship?”

4. One paragraph (250 words) answering the question, “Describe how you have demonstrated leadership ability, both in and out of law school.”

5. One paragraph (250 words) answering the question, “If you had to contribute to the Ms. JD community by writing a blog post, what would you discuss and why?”

6. One paragraph (250 words) answering the question, “Describe in detail an event that you would like to organize at your law school that promotes women in the law.”

**Specific application instructions**: All application materials must be submitted in a single PDF file titled “[First Name Last Name] Fellowship Application” with a cover page that lists First & Last Name, Law School, GPA, LinkedIn Profile Link, Email, and Phone Number.  Applications that are not submitted in this format will not be considered.

Why Do You Ask For My LinkedIn Profile?  We’re asking you for your LinkedIn profile because having one is a huge part of your professional identity.  If you haven’t developed your profile yet, now is a great time to start!  Also, from a practical standpoint, there’s a Fellows group on LinkedIn that allows all of the Fellows from the previous classes to interact with one another.

Submit your application to fellowship@ms-jd.org.  Applications are due Friday, March 31, 2017, at 11:59 pm Central Time.  Ms. JD plans to announce Fellowship finalists by the end of April.  Finalists will then complete interviews with Ms. JD Board Members and Staff by the end of May, and the Ms. JD Fellows and their mentors will be announced by mid-July.

2017 American Inns of Court Warren E. Burger Prize (Writing Competition)

The American Inns or Court Warren E. Burger Prize is a writing competition designed to promote scholarship in the areas of professionalism, ethics, civility, and excellence.

Interested students are invited to submit an original, unpublished essay of 10,000 to 20,000 words on a topic of your choice addressing the issues of excellence in legal skills, civility, ethics, and professionalism.

The author of the winning essay will receive a cash prize of $5,000 and the essay will be published in the South Carolina Law Review. The 2017 Warren E. Burger Prize will be presented during the annual American Inns of Court Celebration of Excellence at the Supreme Court of the United States in Washington, DC on October 21, 2017.

Submissions are due July, 2017.

HOWARD C. SCHWAB MEMORIAL ESSAY CONTEST SECTION OF FAMILY LAW

Each year, the American Bar Association Section of Family Law conducts an essay contest to encourage law students to think about current issues in family law, and to encourage participation in the Section of Family Law.

Students may write on any aspect of family law. The contest is open to second and third-year full-time J.D. students (and second through fourth-year part-time J.D. students) of all ABA-approved law schools, and to first year J.D. students where family law is taught as part of the first year curriculum.

Please bring this essay contest to the attention of your family and juvenile law professors so that they might encourage your law students to participate.

Winning entries receive the following: Monetary prize, certificate of recognition, consideration of essay’s publication in Family Law Quarterly and the Section website, letter to law school dean regarding the achievement, and one year complimentary membership to the Section. To enter, one must submit an entry form by April 14, 2017. Essays are due April 28, 2017.

Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates Law School Scholarship

We firmly believe that legal representation has a meaningful impact on peoples’ lives both directly and indirectly. For an individual who was injured due to the negligence of another, strong and knowledgeable legal representation can make all the difference. Additionally, the judicial decisions made as a result of this legal representation will affect society as a whole.

At Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates, we have made it a goal to help the best, brightest, and most motivated individuals enter into the legal profession, regardless of their financial circumstances. To help achieve this goal we created the Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates Law School Scholarship. The recipient of the award will receive $2000.00 towards educational expenses.

Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the Horwitz, Horwitz & Associates Law School Scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a United States citizen or permanent resident;
  • Be accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited law school within the United States;
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Applicants should also demonstrate good character and strong motivation.

Requirements

Applicants must submit the following documents to be considered:

  • A completed application form;
  • A current college, or graduate school transcript;
  • A typed essay of 1500 – 3000 words about large trucks and eighteen-wheelers, which analyzes the severity of the issue in Illinois. Facts and statistics, case studies, research on the issue, laws that have been enacted or proposed in the U.S. or Illinois to deal with the issue, and possible solutions and safety tips for the public to deal with the issue are all highly recommended to accompany the essay.

Completed Materials may be submitted by any of the following methods:

  • Email
  • Mail

Key Dates

  • The application and supporting material must be received by January 31, 2017
  • The scholarship winner will be notified by email, phone or mail on February 28, 2017

Award

The scholarship must be applied to tuition and other education-related expenses for the Fall 2017- Spring 2018 academic year. A check will be made payable to the recipient’s education institution directly. You are expected to submit any receipts to remain in compliance with the IRS.
