One of my favorite movies is Thank You For Smoking. I find is cynical, cunning and wrong. But I love every minute of it. The movie also has an awesome title sequence. From a design perspective the entire sequence is based around the peak of cigarettes sales. The 2 dimensional images are laid out and then maneuvered using something like After Effects.
After attempting to make my own kinetic typography in After Effects I have a complete new found respect for title sequences and motion type. It looks so simple and easy yet, not so much. Looking at the Thank You for Smoking title sequence, I can see some of the techniques that are used. Like scaling, position and cameras and using the z-axis.
The animation that works the best here is the fact something is always moving. How they control that is adjusting how fast things move and how they scale. If I was to revisit the motion typography aspect I would incorporate more use of constant movement. It helps the work flow better and does not seem so manipulated.
