What makes sense to me

It was interesting to see the un-self-indulgent David Carson again in these video series. My post is appropriately titled in that it is something that Carson said and he really seems to stick to this phrase. His work is so just not out there, that it’s out there. I think it’s very cool to see someone who is not a trained artist create not only art, but a different form of it. I feel like I can relate to that because I know I am not a trained artist, I didn’t go to art school, I took art classes in elementary school and I was taught the rules at one point or another, but they haven’t always stuck with me. I am not really eccentric like his work portrays, but I would like to be sometimes.

His work looks like inDesign or Illustrator gone bad, everything is all over the place, and as a newspaper editor, it evokes a feeling of uneasiness for me, because all of the words aren’t lined up perfectly, what is happening is quite the contrary. He says it’s not about trying to make something look pretty, the art is in interpreting something. I like how Hillman really seems to emphasize that point in this short clip with Carson’s words.

James Victore: I have not had the chance to see art created by Victore prior to watching this movie clip. In explaining what graphic design was for, he said was that work of his (Indian, hangman, social political stuff), not for selling socks. This opinion of his really makes me think about the functionality of graphic design. In my years on knowing how to use photoshop and illustrator, I have primarily only used my skills to create things that mainly for events or logos. I haven’t had the chance to create something that is controversial and culturally representative. And frankly, I don’t know if I want to, it’s kind of intimidating to make something like that. Kudos to Victore though, he’s got that stuff down pat!
