Graphic Designers Are Indeed Artists.

After watching Hullman Curtis artist series I felt well informed. I emailed, tweeted, and posted this link everywhere so that friends I have in the industry so they could watch the videos. There are so many things that I learned from these movies. But the over arching theme of the artists series is being yourself and really loving what you do in your career. In all of these videos about designers and filmmakers you can see the excitement in their face and hear it in their face when they talk about their careers. All of these designers and firms are successful because they do not operate with societies rules. They are creative and expressive and do not follow a set process that the industry has set for them to follow. Artist like Paula Scher can design a logo within 5 seconds without going through creative process thumbnails, sketches, and storyboards because she trusts her instinct and creativity. None of these artists tried to be something they are not. They pushed themselves to the best of their abilities and always continued to learn. Milton Glaser said it best, “ the possibility of learning never disappears… you have to admit that you are never learning”. I think Glaser means that when you are learning everyday that soon or later it will not even seem that you are systemically picking up new ideas but that it is

routinely embodied in your life.

Another point that I took from the movies is living in the moment. In the fast pace industry of advertising and design sometimes you can lose focus and start thinking about other projects and other clients but that is bad for your design. You have an obligation to who ever you are designing for to give them your full attention! I feel like after these movies I truly understand what a designer is. Life of a designer is between two paths, life of an artist and like as a businessman. You are a visual problem solver. Your starting point is interrupting what your client needs and what is the best solution to their problem. Your goal is too emotional engage your clients customers to their product.  You have the power to influence someone and see him or her change because of something your design said or did to his or her emotion. Designers are making meaning messages that may impact cultures along the way. This is why you have to understand the importance of your craft and love what you are doing. Too simply put it, Live Work.
