Today instead of visiting a business around the area someone from the admissions office named Chris Fulkerson came and gave our class his two cents on how to run a university. Elon University is a non-profit organization and it was founded in 1889. Elon’s mission statement states, “Elon University embraces its founders’ vision of an academic community that transforms mind, body, and spirit, and encourages freedom of thought and liberty of conscience.” Every ten years the school goes back and revises the mission statement. However, with this mission statement in place Elon is dedicated to provide students a challenging undergraduate curriculum inside of the classic liberal art boundaries. Also Elon’s mission is dedicated to getting young adults ready for the real world.
Elon’s customers are entirely made up of the students. Elon needs every bit of the students tuition because unlike other schools Elon does not have a huge endowment. Tuition and fees make more than $177 million dollars. Also Elon makes a good amount of money off of donations and grants from the government or bonds. Elon’s customers value a very good education with excellent professors and facilities especially with the extremely large tuition that students here have to pay. Also Elon’s customers or the students expect a very well-kept campus, with a library, a gym, and most importantly dining halls with delicious food. Also opportunities like abroad programs and athletic teams are very important to students. Overall, Elon students value a degree that will help them to be successful in the real world.
Elon’s results have skyrocketed in the past twenty years. Elon College used to be a place that accepted everyone, it was everyone’s safety school. Now Elon University is very selective with who is admitted and local universities around the area aspire to be like Elon. Over the past 20 years the school has had a 92% of growth. With the major growth Elon has been able to expand and beautify it’s campus and become one of the premier universities in North Carolina. Elon was even rated the number one most beautiful campus in the United States. For the Future Elon’s plan is to continue to improve the campus and to hopes to add more amenities like restaurants or hotels and etc. Also this year they received the most applications they have ever received. However, they only want to accept around the same number of students as they did last year. Also they plan to make students live on campus because it is statistically proven that students who live on campus are more likely to do well in school and socially while living on campus. Conclusively, I thought it was very interesting to see how our university is ran and to see where Elon is trying to go in the next couple of years.
